“Knockout Sell in This Business”: 8–0, Super-Lightweight Prospect Reveals How Mike Tyson Facetimed Him Randomly and Gave Life-Changing Advice

For a young prospect in boxing, a conversation with their idol can be a life-changing experience. Such was the case for Giovanni Marquez, a Houston-based undefeated boxer! He got the opportunity to converse with who many would call the best boxer of the last era, Mike Tyson. And to top it all off, Tyson even gave him career advice!

Marquez closed 2023 with a fantastic unanimous decision win over Joshua David Rivera. The Ring magazine even featured him in their New Faces issue back in October 2023. However, the highlight of his career remains his chance encounter with Mike Tyson over Facetime! Something the super lightweight boxer revealed in an interview with Overtime Boxing today.

Giovanni Marquez claims he wants to send home his opponents like Mike Tyson

During the interview, the host brought up the Facetime incident while Marquez was ringside at Errol Spence Jr. vs. Terence Crawford. In response, the 8-0 boxer revealed how the call came to be! “You know my pops doing his thing. I am out here just chilling [about] to get some lunch, and I get a call. And I see Mike Tyson. I am like, ‘Yooo, this is insane, bro,’” said Marquez. 

After speaking to the former ‘Baddest Man on the Planet,’ Marquez claimed, “He told me [to] keep going, stay focused, stay locked in and everything is going to be alright.” Later in the interview, reflecting on the conversation, Marquez suggested he wants to replicate Tyson’s ability to knockout opponents. 

“Knockouts sell in this business. So, the way Tyson got guys out of there, that’s what I am [trying to] do. I am [trying to] entertain. I am [trying to] please the people,” said Marquez. What’s more, he isn’t far from achieving such a feat. While Marquez doesn’t have Mike’s early career knockout streak, Marquez does have five knockout wins out of his record of 8 eight professional fights.

In addition, looking at his list of sparring partners, it’s evident that he trains with the best. Having sparred with the likes of super featherweight champion O’Shaquie Foster, undefeated Shakur Stevenson, and former undisputed champion Devin Haney, Marquez has built up experience to take on the most formidable opponents. 

After receiving motivation from Mike Tyson, Giovanni Marquez must be ready to enter the ring once again. According to sources, his next fight will be on March 29, and it will be broadcast on DZAN!
