“It’s Like Putting Floyd Mayweather in There With a Heavyweight”: CEO Leonard Ellerbe Predicts Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo Outcome

Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, recently predicted the outcome of Canelo Alvarez vs. Jermell Charlo. In his opinion, it’s going to be “a tremendous fight” which would come down to size and skills. According to Ellerbe, the bigger guy that night will have a huge advantage in the ring.

While Canelo Alvarez will defend his titles, Ellerbe believes Charlo will arrive with “a lot of support” behind him. According to Ellerbe, “all of Houston” would come to see “a black fighter” square off against “a Mexican fighter” in the ring. Likewise, he convincingly declared, “It’s going to be a terrific fight.”

Although “skills pay the bills,” Ellerbe believes that size would play a significant role in Charlo vs. Alvarez. “There are weight classes for a reason. But, in this particular case, it’s who’s gonna be the bigger guy that night. I think it’s gonna come down to skills in this fight,” Ellerbe said. “Skills always pay the bills, but sometimes it’s like putting Floyd Mayweather in there with a heavyweight,” he added.

At the same time, Ellerbe thinks moving up two weight classes would not really affect Charlo’s performance against Saul. He also feels that the ancestry of these fighters will play a pivotal role in garnering a lot of views.

Ellerbe expects brothers and sisters to root for African-American Charlo

According to Ellerbe, it is a great opportunity to witness a black fighter face a Mexican fighter in the ring. Although Charlo is the challenger, Ellerbe believes “every brother and sister” will root for Charlo against Alvarez in the ring. He is excited about the fight because Houston will be supporting Charlo.

Charlo currently has a 35-1-1 record. 19 of those victories have been via knockouts. His biggest win in the sport has been against John Jackson in May 2016. He defeated his opponent and became a WBC junior middleweight world champion (154 lbs).
