A boxing matchup without any punches, that summarises the much-anticipated Tommy Fury vs. KSI fight. Last night, in all its pomp, the fight took its course at the AO Arena of Manchester. But when the gong heralded the onset of the clash, the pretense dropped to only make reality clearer. If a celebrity matchup aims to entertain its patrons, this fight did nothing of that sort.

Yet, despite the underwhelming fight put up by both fighters, the victory was handed over to Fury through a controversial majority decision. Controversial because he was deducted a point in the second round for clinches, something that leaves scathing impacts on a fighter’s score. However, the judges felt that the fighter had done just enough more than KSI to deserve the win. Concurring with the disappointment felt by many is Tommy Fury’s trainer and father, John Fury.

John Fury Gets Real about Tommy Fury vs. KSI

When the six rounds had elapsed, ‘TNT’ Fury rose to victory. But the victory failed to give him the position of a victor. In the days leading to the fight, one of the biggest support systems in his corner remained his father, John Fury. But his disappointing performance last night gave the senior Fury no chance to defend his son. He said, “To be honest with you, styles make fights and it wasn’t a good watch because I’m used to two men stand up and box properly. But when another man’s from a different background completely to where it’s hard to replicate the sparring.”

During the fight, spectators observed a frustrating amount of clinches by both fighters. Despite multiple warnings to both, none redressed their fight styles. John Fury remains furious over the referee for not giving ‘JJ’ the fouls that he committed.

The trainer said, “But we knew what he was going to do, but I didn’t expect the referee to let him go with as much holding. He was holding constant and he couldn’t get his arms out and he was smothering his work. It was horrible to watch, you know? Listen, like I said, at the end of it, he’d have got the decision, there’d been no qualms from me.”

What did fight night entail?

In the Misfits Boxing main event, KSI and Tommy Fury failed to deliver what they promised: an entertaining clash. Marred by excessive clinching, stifling any meaningful exchanges of punches, and resulting in a few impactful moments throughout the match, the fight came at the end in favor of Tommy Fury. The judges decided in his favor through a majority decision.

KSI, however, disputed the scorecards. This led to a brief argument in the ring where Fury reminded him that he was the established boxer, while KSI was primarily a YouTuber. Further, Fury also dismissed the idea of a future fight with Jake Paul and expressed his intention to step away from the “crossover” boxing scene, leaving questions about his path in professional boxing, given his narrow victories over crossover opponents.

This bout’s lackluster nature and the ensuing controversy further contribute to the ongoing debate surrounding the credibility and authenticity of crossover boxing events, questioning their ability to provide true sporting entertainment. But one thing this fight has brought about is a sense of uncertainty over KSI’s boxing future.
