In a historic matchup, Amanda Serrano is all set to enter the ring against Danila Ramos on the 27th of October. The fight, which will happen in Florida, will usher in a new era for the change of format it entails. The two fighters in the featherweight class will clash against each other for 12 rounds of 3 minutes each. Most fights in women’s boxing currently entail 2-minute long rounds.

While most rules of pro-boxing will remain intact, the transition from 2 minutes to 3 minutes brings about significant implications. Now, a fighter will possess an additional 60 seconds to deliver a series of devastating blows, making it more convenient to secure a knockout. Interestingly, many fighters have warmly embraced the decision. One individual who has welcomed it is Chantelle Cameron.

The undisputed title fight in the featherweight division is already creating buzz given the atypical format it is set to adopt. An overwhelming number of fighters have welcomed such changes to boxing rules. Welterweight fighter, Chantelle Cameron was amongst the first to praise this new paradigm. As she prepares for her rematch against Katie Taylor on the 25th of November, she expressed her interest in a 3-minute round fight. She said, “I say me [versus Katie Taylor] should follow that and fight 3 minute rounds for the rematch. Spice it up a little.”

Generally, women’s boxing matches follow the configuration of 10, 2-minute rounds.

However, in response to her, Serrano asserted that she did suggest a 3-minute rounds match to Taylor. But, Taylor declined the proposal. She further insisted that not everyone is suited for such challenges. Serrano had previously issued a public challenge to Katie Taylor for a 12-round fight at three minutes per round ahead of their April 30 clash. However, Taylor politely declined the public offer, although it had little significance as the fight was already confirmed.

WBC scorned the 3-minute round proposition

As we inch closer to the big October fight, the format of the fight still remains a topic of contention. While Serrano has asked for a 12-round fight with 3 minutes in each round, the WBC seems to not be okay with the idea of it. President of the body, Mauricio Sulaiman has vehemently denied permitting such a matchup.

In an interview, the president endorsed the WBC’s sanctioned rule of fights. The WBC usually organizes fights in a 10×3 configuration for female boxers. He said that these rules are in place to “protect the boxers from themselves.” He supported his answer by asserting that ample medical research supports the current configuration that they abide by.

Many fighters have contested the current rules of round durations under WBC championship rules. However, it remains uncertain whether the WBC will allow such a matchup. Amanda Serrano and Danila Ramos will contest for the undisputed title in the featherweight division.
