In a recent interview with TopRank ahead of his next fight, Walsh expanded on how carrying the Ali name has affected his career. Despite the inevitable comparisons, Walsh aspires to forge his own identity while honoring his grandfather’s legacy. He strives to be recognized not solely as Ali’s grandson but as a fighter with his unique capabilities. While he respects Ali’s legacy, he aims to make his distinct mark in the sport.

I’m Nico Ali Walsh, so I’m Ali, no matter what. Nobody says that’s who I am. That’s who I was born with. I didn’t ask for this. This is how I was born, so you know, I didn’t compartmentalize this. My Grandfather, I leave it at the personally and I use it in the ring to my advantage.” he said

The undefeated prospect certainly does not want his surname to solely define him, although it does hold a lot of weight. This might be the reason why Walsh wants to prove his worth in the ring and earn fame through merit. In the midst of the celebrity-driven boxing landscape, Walsh maintains his dedication to the sport’s core essence.

Nico Ali Walsh is skeptical about a potential showdown with Jake Paul

In an interview with The Mirror, the 23-year-old openly shared his thoughts on a potential fight with Jake Paul, expressing his desire to establish his legacy beyond the celebrity-driven matches. While the allure of a high-stakes showdown with the YouTube sensation would bring in more limelight for Walsh, he does not want to be labeled as a particular type of fighter.

I want to make a career for myself, I want to continue my grandfather’s legacy in boxing and carve my own path as well. I feel like, no disrespect to him but once you fight someone in that category you often get categorized as that type of fighter” he said

His decision is rooted in a desire to nurture his personal identity and skills. Moreover, as he now steps into the ring this weekend, Walsh will take on the dual role of being an Ali and an aspiring fighter, driven by his personal identity along with the weight of his lineage.
