Demetrius Andrade probably has a once-in-a-lifetime chance that could help him reach his destination. Next month, he fights WBC mandatory challenger David Benavidez, another undefeated boxer with identical aspirations. ‘The Mexican Monster’ also nurtures ambitions of boxing glory and hopes to see Canelo Alvarez in the ring someday. Andrade and Benavidez met during the press conference. Undoubtedly, they would be reviewing each other’s past fights to identify strengths and weaknesses.

Demetrius Andrade saw the David Benavidez-Caleb Plant fight and shared a no-holds-barred view on his upcoming opponent’s performance. Though he maintains an unbeaten record, 35-year-old Demetrius Andrade knows better that he could as well be on the last leg of his career. After nearly fourteen months of inactivity, the Rhode Island-born southpaw returned in January to fight on the Gervonta DavisHector Luis Garcia undercard.

Demetrius Andrade on David Benavidez’s late surge against Caleb Plant

It was on March 25 that David Benavidez met Caleb Plant for his first title defense. The former won the bout unanimously. So Demetrius Andrade shared that it was a good fight, and Benavidez did what he thought necessary. He said, “Um, I thought it was a good fight…it was a good fight that they did. He had to do it….he rallied towards the end of the fight. I’m not too sure if he made adjustments, but it seemed like Plant just wasn’t able to sustain his, you know, output and conditioning, you know, keep him off, so I mean, that’s just what I see.

A slanging match that soon switched places with personal grudges pervaded their pre-match hype. On fight day, Caleb Plant started well, but by the beginning of the second half, it became clear who held the reins of the match. One after the other, power shots, mainly on the body, from the Phoenix, Arizona-born boxer broke the Tennessean’s will. Unsurprisingly, the judges were unanimous in awarding the match in Benavidez’s favor, 117-111, 116-112, and 115-113.

Present with his team, including then-promoter Eddie Hearn, and the invited representatives from the media, Canelo Alvarez could barely answer a few questions when Andrade interrupted him, asking when they could get in the ring together. The world champion tried to reason but to no avail. Finally, security had to intervene and escort ‘Boo Boo’ and his father out. Now, he has a chance to get a step closer to the Mexican icon.
