There are only a handful of fighters who could stand on a pedestal as high as the one that Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have built for themselves. They have undoubtedly made a deep mark in the boxing industry with their respective legacies. Mayweather, however, has a different opinion on this.
A 3-year-old Instagram post has resurfaced where Mayweather takes full credit in the caption for the heights that Pacquiao has achieved in his career. He asks to stop using his name to gain influence and let Pacquiao hold his own weight. Fans are taking over the comment section to show their support for the Filipino fighter and are not pleased with such a statement.

The Mayweather-Pacquiao fight was huge, with celebrities and fans gathering from all over to witness it. Ones who had been desperately waiting for years, finally witnessed the fight of the century go down between the two moguls. Mayweather, in his classic manner, won the fight by managing distance and collecting scores.
Both the fighters had built a legacy before they faced each other in the ring and the talks about the fight had been brewing since 2010. This is what contributed to their fight being an even bigger deal in 2015. Fans have come to the defense of the eight-time champion against the ‘Pretty Boy’s claims. Even Mayweather’s fans consider the statement to be an over-exaggeration.
One fan explained “Pacquiao was a legend long before Mayweather and their fight. Mayweather had absolutely nothing to do with that rise to stardom. I agree that fight should have happened long before it did.” Another fan counted the number of division championships bagged by each player. “Wait what? Last time I checked 8 is more than 5.”
A Mayweather fan responded saying, “It certainly added to his legacy but whole career isn’t tied to you Floyd. I rock with Floyd but we gotta be honest.”
Taking a shot at Mayweather’s fighting style, another wrote, “Really… Mayweather? Manny Pacquiao’s 8 division championship belt in boxing is for fighting every champion in each division and winning them while you are the best and fastest cyclist in the square ring.“ One took it far enough to say “Absolutely not if anything the other way around.” Numerous other comments under the post stand with ‘Pacman’ on this matter.
Is a rematch possible?
Mayweather flew east to Tokyo last year to lock horns with MMA star Mikuru Asakura. There he found Pacquiao promoting the event. Though the fighters had been respectful towards each other after the fight, the awkward air was hard to ignore. At the event, Pacquiao showed support for Asakura and was met with a bitter response from his rival. Mayweather did not hesitate to bring up multiple times his victory over Pacquiao.
