A sheer robbery. That is precisely how a substantial section of the boxing world reacted after Francis Ngannou went toe to toe with Tyson Fury. The former UFC Heavyweight champion had almost all odds stacked against him. He was undersized and the disparity of ring time between them was too startling to be true. However, not only did he put on a fight to remember but also had many convinced that he was the actual victor.

At the same time, it bears mention that many do not deem it a robbery, including a former champion. But he made a claim that his win was not deserving. Who is this former champion and why does he say so? Let’s find out.

The former champion is none other than Johnny Nelson. The British boxer is the longest ever reigning Cruiserweight champion. After a celebrated career, his record stands 45 victories with only 12 defeats. Although he last fought in 2005, he continues to be associated with the sport in capacity as an analyst. In a recent interview with Seconds out, he contends that Fury won the fight as he outnumbered Ngannou in total number of punches thrown and landed. But given the disparity in experience, Fury should not have performed the way he did and was not a deserving victor.

Reflecting on the same, he stated, “But then you look at it, you think Tyson didn’t deserve the win. But he got the win because he landed more shots, because of his pedigree of what he’s done so that’s why he got the nod. Then you look at Ngannou, his first professional fight, the performance he put on in comparison to Tyson if he got the the win he wouldn’t complain. So as Tyson as champion, he is not suppose to lose like that.”

In a world where fans are split between robbery or not, Nelson gives an insightful perspective that would be hard to deny. Moreover, let’s take a look at the stakes at play for the Cameroonian-French in the sport going forward.

Francis Ngannou in the mix of Heavyweight boxing?

Given Ngannou’s performance against, ‘The Gypsy King,’ his trainer Dewey Cooper claims he is here to stay in the Heavyweight mix and might be ranked in the top 10 soon. This was also attested by none other than the president of WBC. He also gives an insight into the fact that Mauricio Sulaiman considers him one of the best heavyweight boxers out there, including the top 10 heavyweight boxers.

In an interview, he stated, “Mauricio Sulaiman, the president of [the] WBC, said he is going to rank him in the top ten because he is better than most of the heavyweights in the top ten. He said that in the ring”
