In boxing, fighters calling out potential opponents generates just as much hype as the real fights themselves. Fans love hearing who’s on their favorite boxer’s radar. Lately, it’s British southpaw Jack Catterall stealing headlines after defeating former world champion Jorge Linares last Saturday in Liverpool.
Catterall stunned Linares with a vicious left hook in the fifth round of their 12-round junior welterweight bout at M&S Bank Arena. Since his controversial loss to Josh Taylor back in February, Catterall has now racked up two consecutive victories. And after impressively taking out Linares, he’s set his sights on two elite 140-pound contenders – Devin Haney and Regis Prograis – who are scheduled to clash in a huge title fight on December 9th.

Why is Jack Catterall calling out Devin Haney and Regis Prograis?
Jack boldly told ESPN Ringside, “I’m going to need a Josh Taylor, a Devin Haney, a Regis Prograis to bring the best out of me and bring that fire.” For Catterall, it’s about finding the kind of world-class opponents who can reignite the competitive spark within him that was on full display in the Taylor fight earlier this year. He believes only facing the top echelon of fighters can truly push him to elevate his game to championship levels.
This mindset clearly reflects Catterall’s immense frustration after losing a highly controversial decision to Taylor in February. At the time, Catterall immediately called for a rematch, adamant that he deserved the undisputed light welterweight crown firmly in Taylor’s grasp.
But injuries and delays have since postponed the anticipated rematch between the two for months on end. With Taylor inactive for so long, he was subsequently stripped of his WBO belt. And a loss to Teofimo Lopez in November cost Taylor his remaining three titles as well.

Now the rematch with Taylor is deeply personal for Catterall, who has voiced his displeasure with Taylor’s dismissive comments about him since their first fight. Taylor, for his part, criticized Catterall for barely getting by an aging Linares who promptly announced his retirement after the bout. Still, promoter Eddie Hearn believes the British public desperately wants to see Taylor and Catterall run it back, given the controversial nature of their first meeting. However, Regis and ‘The Dream’ are new to his list of aspiring adversaries. Moreover, he has recently weighed in on their forthcoming bout.
What are Jack’s thoughts about Regis Prograis vs. Devin Haney?
Jack Catterall recently beat Jorge Linares and is now eyeing the December 9 fight between Regis Prograis and Devin Haney. This bout is for the WBC super-lightweight title and will happen in San Francisco. Aspiring to be a world champion himself, Catterall shared his thoughts in a post-fight interview.

In a recent interview with Boxing News, he revealed that he favors Regis Prograis. This is because he believes Regis is a more seasoned and strong fighter in the 140-pound category. Catterall thinks Prograis has the upper hand due to his experience and power. Additionally, he pointed out that Devin Haney seems large for the weight class. So, he’s interested to see how Haney adjusts to the new weight. Besides the upcoming fight, Catterall also honored Jorge Linares, who retired after their match. He showed deep respect for Linares’ career and felt honored to be his last opponent.
Jack Catterall is not just a boxer chasing wins; he’s a fighter seeking challenges that ignite his competitive spirit. From calling out top-tier opponents like Devin Haney and Regis Prograis to making his rematch with Josh Taylor personally, Catterall is setting the stage for future high-stakes battles.
