After the fight, Canelo Alvarez spoke to the media where he talked about how he was forced to make the 152 lbs. catchweight. He said in Spanish, “I’ll tell you the truth of what happened. Why would I give up the weight? I’m at 154. I’m the 154-pound champion.” However, that’s not the same story narrated by Floyd Mayweather. In an interview with FightHype, Mayweather said, “For the record, a lot of people said it was a catchweight. I mean I didn’t choose the catchweight, Canelo did. I didn’t ask for a catchweight.

Then he further explains his side of the story. He stated, “I know I remember, somebody from the Canelo team had done an interview and said, ‘Yo we’ll fight Florida at a catchweight.’ So my team jumped on and said, ‘Well tell me what catchweight you guys, like, want to fight at?’ They chose the catchweight.” Mayweather mentioned that he never cared about the catchweight, and he’d have also fought at 154 lbs. if it were up to him.
