Gervonta Davis has finally drawn an opponent. Has he? The American boxer has been on the shelf for almost a year since knocking out Ryan Garcia in April of last year. Since then, the rumors of him fighting different foes have received traction, but to no avail. Similarly, a recent rumor of the ‘Tank’ moving up and challenging Subriel Matias piqued the fans’ interest. But how much truth is there to the murmurs?
Davis, aka Abdul Wahid, has gained notoriety for large slumps of inactivity after putting up a fight. The trend continues as he screens through potential suitors. While the 29-year-old has his heart set on nobody, the 140-pound enforcer Matias is the latest name thrown for him. However, Mayweather Promotions’ CEO, Leonard Ellerbe, has shot down these reports.

‘Tank’ Davis was rumored to headline the PBC’s first card on Amazon Prime on March 30. The details further revealed that the IBF super lightweight world title was at stake. But that’s not the case. Ellerbe responded to these rumors on his X handle.

Ellerbe responded to one such post and replied with two cap emojis, indicating that the news was a lie. In a separate reply, he added, “These mfs say anything for clicks [with a face palm emoji].”
Notably, Matias recently defended his IBF super lightweight title against Shohjahon Ergashev in November. He might be on the sidelines for a couple of months before deciding on his next fight. Meanwhile, the wait continues for Davis’ fans, who want to see him fight.
The brewing tensions with Devin Haney
The hopes were high when Devin Haney issued a challenge to Davis after becoming the WBC champion. Their animosity has only gained steam, with the two sides exchanging words on multiple occasions. Their rivalry added a new chapter when Davis claimed he almost knocked out Haney in a sparring session until Floyd Mayweather jumped in.
“It was back and forth. But once I got tired, Devin picked up a little bit. I caught him in the sparring match and almost knocked him out,” Davis told Gillie Da Kid.

This adds a spark to their soaring tensions. Previously, Bill Haney disclosed they had sent a $20 million fight proposal to Davis, which he turned down. It remains to be seen whether the two will ever settle their differences in the square circle.
