Devin Haney Claims Ryan Garcia Fight Will Prove He Is ‘The New Face of Boxing’

Is it Canelo Alvarez or Gervonta Davis? You can argue over who is the face of boxing. But it’s Devin Haney who has laid claim to the coveted tag. The American knows he will settle the debate once he beats Ryan Garcia on April 20. But does he check all the boxes? He certainly thinks so.

‘The Dream’ and ‘KingRy’ finally agreed to put the WBC super lightweight title on the line after the latter went on an opponent screening spree and lastly returned to Haney. Besides the golden strap, the future star of boxing is also up for grabs for the two superstars hailing from California. While Haney boasts a stacked resume after defeating George Kambosos Jr. and Vasiliy Lomachenko, he believes he has all the criteria fulfilled. But has he?

Devin Haney set to edge out others

The WBC champion discussed the implications of the Garcia fight when he sat down with Sofia Gutierrez. When asked how the fight would steer his career, Haney revealed it carried deeper implications. Haney said, “I mean, it’s going to catapult me.“

“It’s going to prove that I’m the new face of boxing. I’m the man, and you know, I’m a huge draw,” Haney added.

The 25-year-old has been labeled a no-draw because of the rumored low PPV sales of his last few fights. In addition, his defensive and technical style also doesn’t draw fans’ attention. Reportedly, he only sold 50k PPVs when he clinched the WBC title from Regis Prograis.

However, the fight with Garcia will rack up better PPV numbers, as Garcia has a larger fan base and sold 1.1 million PPVs in his fight with Gervonta Davis. The fight might help Haney shed his non-crowd-pulling fighter tag, an affair that he believes will be “fireworks.”

‘The Dream’ eager to prove his greatness against Ryan Garcia

The sparks of their childhood rivalry have been ignited, and the fight has been in the making for a long time. When asked what fans could expect, he declared, “Fireworks. You know, it’s been a long time coming. We’re three and three in the amateurs, and, you know, this is number seven.”

“So this is the time to seal the deal. To prove who is the better man and who has gotten since the amateurs. Who has developed into the pros better. It’s time for me to show how great I really am,” Haney concluded.
