What separates Brian McIntyre from the rest? He has molded the likes of Terence Crawford and Amir Khan into world champions, but he has had a brief run-in with the authorities that put him in the spotlight. While the American trainer had a splendid 2023, a trip to jail proved to be a killjoy. However, the elite coach recently stated that his detention played a part in his bagging the prestigious Ring Magazine award.
‘BoMac’ guided ‘Bud’ to the top of the pound-for-pound ranking as the latter defeated Errol Spence Jr. He then helped Chris Eubank Jr. exact revenge over Liam Smith in September. However, a day later, as he soaked in success and stood at Manchester Airport in hopes of a loud reception back at home, he was arrested on charges of carrying a gun. It was this incident that made him a household name as he seized headlines.

Brian McIntyre reveals going to jail bagged him, Trainer of the Year award,
The 53-year-old strongly believes his jail incident proved a crucial factor in swaying the votes in his favor. When asked whether guiding Crawford to the undisputed crown at 147 made him a winner, he explained it was his going to jail. He told Fight Hype, “I think ‘cause I went to jail.”
McIntyre added, “I think ‘cause I went to jail my name just — it was Crawford’s win, then Eubank’s win, then I goes to jail. If I wouldn’t have went to jail they would’ve been like ‘oh, that’s BoMac’. I really do think so. That’s just my opinion but we did have a good year.”
BoMac was looking at the standard five-year minimum sentence for possessing a gun in the UK. However, the “exceptional circumstances” surrounding him helped him escape the penalty, and the judge gave him a suspended 20-month term. What proved critical was the testimony by Crawford and a gesture by Amir Khan.
Amir Khan aided in ‘BobMac’s release from jail
Khan disclosed to ESNews that not only did he testify for him, but he also wrote a letter to help out his coach. He said, “I’m glad that the UK judge made it very easy for him. I wrote a letter for him as well. Bomac deserved it.”

Notably, McIntyre edged out Shingo Inoue and Bill Haney for the award, and the team at B&B received the accolades. It remains to be seen when his famed disciple, Crawford, makes his return and whether McIntyre will guide him to another victory.
