Within hours, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will be entering the ring for one of the most anticipated fights of the year. At the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, the fighter will face off against Jermell Charlo. The undisputed Light middleweight champion, Jermell Charlo, is going up two weight classes to fight Canelo Alvarez. The bout marks a new chapter in the boxing realm, as it has rarely happened that two undisputed champs in their own weight classes have come together to clash. But here we are.
In a bid to defend his Super middleweight titles, Alvarez has gone through strenuous training to sustain the lethal avalanche that is Charlo. The hype for this fight is reaching its pinnacle tonight. However, when it comes to Canelo, this isn’t the first time that the Mexican boxer has fought in such a high-magnitude bout. He has been part of some of the most memorable fights in modern times. One of his most historical fights, however, still remains his most challenging. So, which fight was it? And against whom?

A pound-for-pound great, Canelo Alvarez has undertaken 63 fights to date and has lost only two. One against the legendary Floyd Mayweather Jr., and the other, very recently, to Dmitry Bivol. Most would presume that the losses he faced at the hands of Mayweather and Bivol would likely have been his most challenging fights. But they’d be wrong, at least according to Canelo himself. Despite losing $108 million collectively in these two fights, Canelo has named another fighter as his “toughest” challenger.
Talking about the fighter that made things very difficult, Canelo said, “I think Golovkin is one of my tough fights.” It is strange to hear Canelo say that after fighting Mayweather and Bivol, Gennady Golovkin was the fighter that gave him the most difficulty. The last time Canelo fought, the two-time world champion was back in September 2022. Even though Canelo won the fight through unanimous decision, the fight was not as easy for Canelo as people had presumed.
Alvarez revealed the details of his ordeal with ‘GGG’ while on the FULL SEND PODCAST. Canelo remarked on his fight with GGG after the interviewer asked if he was getting frustrated in the ring while fighting Golovkin. ” Very much. With him, yeah. I tried to hit him so hard and try to knock out him, and when you don’t catch him and you miss a lot of punches, that’s hard,” revealed Canelo.
This revelation sheds light on the kind of fighter that Golovkin is. However, it is important to note that their match-up in 2022 was the third time the two fought each other. So what happened the first two times?
A war for the history books, three battles between GGG and Canelo
It’s been a year since Canelo Alvarez won against Gennady Golovkin at the same arena where he is to fight Charlo tonight. But that September night has etched itself in boxing history. It was, after all, the third installment of the long-running battle between the two legacy fighters. GGG and Canelo had fought twice in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

The first was ruled a split-decision draw, while the second matchup was ruled in favor of Canelo through a majority decision. But when they entered the third chapter in this volatile saga, Canelo tried his best to not leave anything to chance. However, many believed that Canelo’s win in the third fight wasn’t all that spectacular.
Today, when the boxing world turns its attention toward the upcoming Canelo vs. Charlo fight, it is hard to forget the nail-biting fight that happened at the same place a year ago.
