Despite Canelo Alvarez’s Dominance Over Jermell Charlo, David Benavidez Questions Saul’s Power: “He Couldn’t Get a Knockout”

David Benavidez will go toe-to-toe with Demetrius Andrade in an ultimate slugfest on 25 November later this year. However, that’s not the reason the ‘Mexican Monster’ is making the headlines today. Rather, it’s because of what he said about Saul Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed super middleweight champion. Despite Canelo teaching Jermell Charlo an important boxing lesson during their last encounter in September, Benavidez remains unimpressed. 

Since Canelo dismantled Charlo in the ring, fans and experts alike have contemplated who ‘Cinnamon’ would take on next. For many fans, the best Canelo can face is David Benavidez. At one point, there were even talks of the two squaring off. But ultimately, a fight between Benavidez and Andrade was announced. However, Benavidez has not given up hope for the fight against Canelo. If Benavidez wins the fight against Andrade, he will be the top contender for Canelo. So, Benavidez’s recent remark about Canelo’s fleeting punching power can be the start of something big. But what exactly did the ‘Mexican Monster’ say?

David Benavidez and his father share the same opinion about Canelo Alvarez

While appearing in an interview with SHOWTIME Sports, the reporter recalled what Benavidez’s father said about Canelo’s power. “To him [Benavidez’s father], he [Canelo] looked good…but I [Benavidez’s father] don’t think the power is there anymore,” the reporter recalled. The reporter further reiterated Benavidez’s father’s remark, “He had a lot of opportunities to finish Charlo, but he never really hurt him.”

In response, David Benavidez agreed with what his father had asserted while further elaborating his opinion. “Yeah, and he’s fighting in the 18 by 18 ring…Charlo didn’t really have any room to move. He didn’t really throw that much either, so I was expecting him to get a knockout,” Benavidez explained. Citing those reasons, Benavidez claimed Canelo is possibly losing his punching power. “He couldn’t get a knockout. I don’t know, maybe his power is going away,” said Benavidez.

Later this year, Benavidez will defend his Interim WBC super middleweight title against undefeated Demetrius Andrade. The fight will unfold at Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas and will headline on Showtime PPV. So, going into the highly anticipated clash, Benavidez spoke about his opponent with Boxing Scene. 

Benavidez expressed his excitement about returning to a pay-per-view event. When it came to his upcoming opponent, Benavidez claimed Demetrius was a good fighter, but he was better because of his size and strength. “Andrade is a slick fighter, but I’m the bigger, stronger, and better boxer,” said Benavidez. He went on to explain that he was working hard to knock out Demetrius. “I’m putting in the work every day so that I can…go for the knockout,” said Benavidez.
