June 29th saw one of the most lethal showdowns in boxing history. In the most anticipated match, two pound-for-pound fighters in the welterweight clashed to determine who amongst them was the better fighter. Yes, the tremors sent by Terence Crawford vs. Errol Spence Jr. matchup are still being felt in the boxing realm even today. A historic matchup in its true sense, the ultimate unification of all titles in the weight class saw Terence Crawford go home with the victory. However, now, his opponent, Spence Jr. invoked the rematch clause placed in their contract.

However, as the rematch takes its course before the year ends, another fighter has stepped into this conversation. Conor Benn has shown interest in entering the ring against either of these fighters.  The fighter is looking for a boost in his boxing career after he was temporarily suspended for doping allegations. However, as his team appealed the decision, the WBC cleared his name. The body further said that the spiked levels of the fertility drug clomifene could be a result of the high consumption of eggs. However, UKAD’s appeal looms large against the National Anti-Doping Panel’s decision to clear the British welterweight boxer’s name in the doping scandal. The jury is still out regarding when Conor Benn will be able to make his return to the squared circle.

As the public perception of his career took a turn for the worse, he is looking for avenues where he could redeem himself. The Crawford vs. Spence Jr. rematch is one such avenue.

Does Conor Benn think he can demand fights now?

It all started with Benn questioning the idea of the rematch itself. He said Spence Jr.’s decision to invoke the rematch clause was a mistake. He said, “If I were Errol Spence, I would not activate the rematch clause of the contract. You know, for me, this fight was pretty one-sided…”

Now leveraging this opportunity, the fighter has further offered to take on the winner of the rematch. He said, “I’ll happily fight the winner of them. Top five, any of them, any day of the week. I’ll happily go to the States and challenge the Americans.”

However, fans were quick to call the fighter out on what some might perceive as a desperate attempt to gain relevance. One user pointed out that the fighter has no credibility to ask for such fights.

Another user unabashedly called Benn desperate.

A user criticized the audacity of Benn to demand such high-profile matches after not having fought for almost 18 months. Benn last fought Chris van Heerden in April of 2022.

A user used sarcasm to make their point. They further said Benn should in fact take the fight to prove that he does not belong in the same league as the two fighters.

Finally, a user resounded the popular sentiment that the fighter should be banned for his supposed doping incident.

Amidst the doping controversy, his promoter Eddie Hearn has indicated that his fighter wants to enter the ring sometime in September. However, getting a fight that would revitalize his career after the doping fiasco seems difficult. It remains to be seen who the fighter will fight against after his long period of absence from the sport.
