It was a revelation that must have startled scores of fans and followers. 37 years after it came out, after having generated $1.7 billion in revenue, Mike Tyson shared details of his expertise over the Nintendo game named after him. The youngest Heavyweight champion in history was one of the keynote speakers at the 2023 Vault Conference.
Patrick Bet-David‘s annual feature in Miami, Florida, lasted three days. From August 30 to September 2, the event centered around business strategy and growth saw active participation from CEOs, entrepreneurs, and executives. Over the course of an extensive discussion, Mike Tyson took everyone through his life journey. He shared some of the most significant moments, besides a bit of trivia and information about him that very few were party to.

One of the attendees asked, “We all grew up playing Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. What the h*ll was the cheat code to get straight to fight you at the end of the video game cuz I kept losing to you in the end?” Mike Tyson soon had the entire hall burst into laughter with his response. He said, “I never played the game…never played.” A surprised Patrick Bet-David asked whether he genuinely meant what he said. The former Heavyweight champion replied jovially. In a few commercials, he acted as if he were playing the game. But the fact remained that he had never deep-dived into Punch Out!! casually. “But [I] never played the game,” replied ‘Iron’ Mike.
It was in 1983 that Kyoto-based Nintendo came out with ‘Punch Out!!‘ Four years later, they tied up with Mike Tyson and released ‘Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!!‘

The game went on to break records internationally. Many experts hail ‘Mike Tyson’s Punch Out!!‘ as one of the greatest video games of all time. It is said that a boxing match that featured ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ inspired the Nintendo top brass to use the boxer’s persona in the upcoming game. According to several reports, for the three years of his association with the brand, ‘Kid Dynamite’ received $50,000.
Mike added another feather to his international fame as he trained Francis Ngannou. The former UFC Heavyweight champion made his pro-boxing debut against Tyson Fury on October 28. The Cameroonian-French fighter’s performance against a reigning heavyweight champion stunned millions. Many credit ‘Iron’ Mike for what he brought to the table as he took over the assignment.
