Errol Spence Jr. is finally getting the opportunity to redeem himself from the scathing loss he suffered at the hands of Terence Crawford. In one of the most anticipated matchups of the year, the two-pound-for-pound fighters clashed for a historic unification of all titles in the welterweight division. Despite being resilient overall, Spence Jr. lost the bout that night. But their story does not end there.

Come December, the New York native will have a chance to overturn his loss. However, he won’t be entering the ring with all his terms met.

Immediately after conceding defeat to ‘Bud’ Crawford, ‘The Truth’ Spence Jr. invoked the rematch clause in their fight contract. As per the clause, the defeated fighter gets to activate it within 30 days of its initial bout. However, the winner gets to decide at what weight will the fight take place.

As ‘The Truth’ asked for yet another opportunity to prove himself, he sought a change in weight for the rematch. He suggested to Crawford that they could move up to 154. However, ‘Bud’ did not seem to be too keen on this idea.

Finally, putting all conjecture around the weight class for the rematch, ‘Bud’ announced that the rematch would indeed take place in the welterweight division. Speaking about a possible date in December, he had said, “He exercised his rematch [clause] and that’s the fight that’s supposed to happen next. We shall see how negotiations go. We supposed to fight in December, and yeah, I’m back in training.”

Later, while refuting a change in weight class, the undisputed champion explained that his opponent did not ask for a weight change in writing, hence, the fight would go on in the same weight class.

Spence Jr. finds support in Mayweather promotions CEO

As the rematch between ‘Bud’ and ‘The Truth’ is all set to take place in December, the boxing realm has begun giving their predictions for the big fight. While most still place Spence Jr. as the underdog in the fight, he’s found support in a leading voice in the realm. Mayweather Promotions’ Leonard Ellerbe has seconded the opinion of Spence Jr. to fight the bout at 154.

The CEO said that an increase of seven pounds would put the fighter in a more comfortable position to undertake this fight. He said, “154 is seven pounds North. It does make a difference. Errol Spence is an incredible fighter, and Crawford is too. If that’s what Errol wants to do in the rematch, I support him wholeheartedly because he as a fighter, as a man, he knows what he wants, and if Crawford will grant him that opportunity to give it to the fans.”
