After a dominating victory against Demetrius Andrade last year, David Benavidez is now in need of a new opponent. While boxing fans feel Benavidez has unfinished business at 168 lbs, Jose Benavidez Sr. declared that ‘Red Flag’ wanted to move up in weight and compete for the Light-Heavyweight titles.
Recently, when Artur Beterbiev dismantled Callum Smith with a 7th-round finish, Benavidez Sr. was left impressed by Artur’s boxing. On the other hand, when Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez and Dmitry Bivol fought, Jose Sr. saw laudable skills in both fighters. As a result, Jose Benavidez Sr. now believes David Benavidez will be a spectacular competition to the likes of ‘Zurdo’, Beterbiev, and Bivol.

Speaking about the recent unified Light-Heavyweight bout between Callum Smith and Artur Beterbiev, David Benavidez’s father praised the Canadian boxer. According to Jose Benavidez Sr., the 39-year-old has power, patience, and endurance, qualities which make him a commendable boxer. “He hits super hard. He took his time, he got caught with a couple of punches. It was an interesting fight. I really enjoyed that fight,” said Benavidez Sr.
“He got hit, he came back, and he finished. Callum Smith, in a fashioned way, did very well. Exciting. [But], he [Beterbiev] hits hard. Undefeated with his knockout streaks. He’s a dangerous fighter,” Benavidez Sr. added. In this context, Benavidez Sr. claimed David Benavidez would like to face the likes of Beterbiev, Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez, and Dmitry Bivol.
“Bivol is a great fighter too. We would love to face any of them you know. Maybe, we can face Zurdo Ramirez at 168, I think he went to Cruiserweight now. But, we would love to fight Zurdo Ramirez at 175. Or Beterbiev,” he said. “Those are the most dangerous fights in the business right now. So, we are willing to do that. We just want to give the people good fights,” he concluded.

What are some viable options for David’s next fight?
Although Jose Benavidez Sr. called out a list of names, given the current circumstances, it will certainly take David Benavidez time before he can fight Bivol or Beterbiev. While Benavidez has to gain weight, Bivol already declared he wishes to face Beterbiev and become an undisputed champion. Hence, it is obvious that Benavidez will have to wait for Bivol vs. Beterbiev first. Meanwhile, after John Ryder showed interest in David, Benavidez Sr. announced he would like to stage Benavidez vs. Ryder soon.
