On September 23, 2023, Sandy Ryan‘s dream of becoming the female unified champion in the Welterweight division was shattered. The British boxer traveled to Orlando, Florida to snatch the WBC and WBA titles from her opponent, Jessica McCaskill. The fight was on the Richardson Hitchins vs. Jose Zepeda card, and Ryan vs. McCaskill was announced to be a draw by a split decision. One judge scored it 97-93 in favor of the American, the other one scored 96-94 for Ryan, while the last one had 95-95 on its card.

Ryan couldn’t believe it as she thought she had done enough to clinch the victory over her opponent. Even the Undisputed Middleweight champion, Claressa Shields, feels the same about the decision of Ryan’s fight. She supported her and claimed that she was the winner of the fight for her, clearly.

Claressa Shields thinks Sandy Ryan got robbed

The fight was quite a close contest, as both fighters held their ground throughout. Sandy Ryan landed more punches than Jessica McCaskill significantly, moreover, she even came out to be a more aggressive fighter in the bout. She also stunned the home fighter with a body punch in the seventh round. On the other hand, the impactful round for McCaskill was the third one, when she made Ryan’s nose bleed.

Moreover, in the ninth round, she threw a barrage of punches and showed her typical aggressive style to the crowd. But it was handled pretty well by her opponent. Their bout even had the two-time Undisputed champion impressed, that she instantly went on X to talk about Ryan in high regard. She wrote, “Wow [Sandy Ryan] You should be undisputed champ!!!!! Congrats! You earned that! A draw is bullshit @DAZNBoxing“.

Well, this must have meant a lot to the fighter. After their fight, immediately, both fighters immediately started talking about their rematch and how they wanted to get back on the canvas against each other again as soon as possible.

Sandy Ryan and Jessica McCaskill can’t wait to run it back

After the decision came out, both fighters were left seemingly baffled. Ryan and McCaskill believed themselves to be the winners, but that did not happen, instead, it was declared to be a draw. To this, the American fighter expressed her disappointment, she said, “Nobody wants a draw.” She pointed out that it’s her first draw and she doesn’t really know how to feel about it. While, Ryan said, “We’ve got to run that back. Jess seems to be happy to run it back. I thought I was going to be unified champion tonight, but it’s boxing, ain’t it.

However, if she wants to fulfill the expectations of Claressa Shields, she’ll also have to snatch the IBF title from Natasha Jonas to be the Undisputed Champion. And the world knows how the negotiations of Shields vs. Jonas fell apart a few months ago. Hopefully, they do get the rematch finalized soon, and the fans soon may get the three title holder Welterweight champion in female boxing.
