Canelo Alvarez has quoted a price for the fight everyone wants. But his demand of $200 million to fight David Benavidez has split the boxing community into two halves. While some argue the quoted price effectively robes fans of the awaited match, others believe it’s merely business. It seems the Mayweather Promotion’s CEO, who understands the business side of things, has also thrown his support behind the champion. What does he have to say?

The Mexican champion had sent shockwaves throughout the boxing world when he declared, “If a promoter comes to me and offers me 150 or 200 million, I fight tomorrow.” It seems Leonard Ellerbe has “no problem” with the steep asking price as he spoke his mind in a conversation with Fight Hype.

The American promoter believes the super middleweight champion has already collected heavy paychecks in his career, fighting big names, So, it’s fair if he asks for a higher payroll. Ellerbe said, “I don’t have a problem with it. I mean, he [Canelo Alvarez] is speaking how he feels. He knows what he is doing. He has been in huge fights, he has made an enormous amount of money. Several hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Moreover, the Mayweather Promotions’ head honcho considers Benavidez, 27, as another challenger in the long, illustrious reign of Alvarez. “He has had a fantastic career thus far. He has fought everybody that he possibly could and David Benavidez is just another challenge out there potentially for him. I’m excited. As a fan, I would love to see the fight. But at the end of the day, Canelo is calling the shots,” Ellerbe concluded.

Benavidez, at 28-0, turned to his Instagram handle and lashed out at Alvarez for asking such a hefty fee. He wrote, “@canelo if I have nothing to offer then why are you demanding you get 150-200 million to fight someone who isn’t worth anything? Hopefully after you make that 150 million you have enough left over to buy a pair of n*ts.”

Notably, Alvarez will defend his marbles against Jaime Munguia on May 4. Meanwhile, Benavidez has decided to move up to 175 and carve his path. He will fight Oleksandr Gvozdyk for the interim title at 175. A win could position him to challenge for the undisputed crown, an opportunity that Alvarez has denied him.
