When? The question has haunted legions of fans over the last couple of months. Nothing excites a die-hard follower more than watching his idol square up against another big name. Canelo Alvarez remains one of the ‘faces of boxing.’ His fights are some of the biggest PPV draws of the day. But somewhere down the line, fans always seem to have felt a vacuum. After all, the Mexican icon had yet to square up against another top gun in the division, David Benavidez.
On his part, as the WBC’s mandatory challenger, the Phoenix, Arizona-born ‘El Monstruo’ has been relentless in calling out the Mexican champion. Albeit with a question mark, there appeared to be other exciting prospects as well, such as a fight with Terence Crawford. Now, after months of talks and speculation, it seems fans might finally have an answer to their big query: when.
At long last, it may unfold!

As per the reports that have been filtering in, Canelo Alvarez may finally meet David Benavidez in September 2024. But that’s not all. The reports also suggest that the undisputed super middleweight champion might entertain a duel even before he faces ‘The Mexican Monster’. Probably around May, fans might see him take on either Terence Crawford, Jaime Munguia, or even Jermall Charlo.
‼️ Jaime Munguia, Jermall Charlo and Terence Crawford are reportedly potential opponents for Canelo Alvarez in May, with David Benavidez a potential opponent for Canelo in September. [According to @ESPNKnockout]

He lost the light heavyweight bout to Dmitry Bivol last year. However, the Mexican icon reigns supreme as the undisputed super middleweight champion. After his first title defense against long-time rival Gennady Golovkin, he defeated John Ryder and Jermell Charlo this year to retain the belts. He had signed a $100 million, three-fight deal with the PBC this year. So the fight with the ‘Iron Man’ was the first one in the series. There are still two more to go.
It seemed for a long time that Canelo Alvarez’s fights with heavy hitters like Benavidez and Crawford would remain just that – talks. Even some of the tentative efforts appeared to be hitting the skids. However, the hopes and prayers of supporters would seem to have been granted at last.
The Way of the Alternates
Right from the first title defense against Caleb Plant, David Benavidez has been clear about the big fight in his crosshairs. Reportedly, the unbeaten champion even approached Alvarez with an eight-figure sum as well, but to no avail. A huge relief came later on when he was elevated to the position of mandatory challenger. Though it would last until March 2024, there was still no guarantee that Alvarez would accept a fight.

In parallel, Terence Crawford sounded off his bugle call right after he became the first man to become a two-division undisputed champion. He had defeated then-unified champion Errol Spence Jr. to accomplish this feat. Now, with his eyes set on bigger goals, he wanted nothing short of Jermell Charlo or Canelo Alvarez. But with the ‘Iron Man’ soundly beaten by the Mexican champion, a straight one-on-one fight seemed straightforward. However, there’s a big hurdle. In order to meet Alvarez, ‘Bud’ might have to climb up three divisions, something many experts have cautioned against.
As far as Jermall Charlo is concerned, he was, interestingly, the first choice for an opponent before Canelo Alvarez settled on going against his twin brother. However, the ‘Hitman,’ who had been away from boxing for close to two years, has expressed keenness to fight Alvarez to avenge his brother’s loss. He finally announced his return with an emphatic win over Jose Benavidez Jr. on November 25. For sure, it will be a double delight for the fans if the fight happens.
