Canelo Alvarez has finally revealed his next opponent for the Cinco De Mayo weekend on May 4. The Mexican superstar will go toe-to-toe with his Mexican counterpart, Jaime Munguia, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, that’s not the opponent people had wanted Canelo to fight. Instead, most boxing fans wanted David Benavidez against Canelo.

Interestingly, Benavidez was Canelo’s WBC mandatory opponent for a long time, but that fight doesn’t seem to be on the horizon, something Benavidez has criticized Canelo for a long time. Meanwhile, Canelo appeared in the kick-off press conference last night for the Munguia fight. During the event, Fight Hype caught up with the multi-division world champion, as he demanded an insane amount to fight ‘The Mexican Monster.’

Speaking to Fight Hype, Canelo made his intention clear, claiming David Benavidez is in no position to offer him any money for a fight. “He brings nothing to the table for me,” said Canelo. However, the only feasible way to make the fight possible is if Canelo is offered $150 – $200 million to face Benavidez.

“[If] one promoter who I work [with], they come and say I offer to you 150-200 million, I [will] fight tomorrow,” said Canelo. It’s worth mentioning that such humongous payouts in boxing aren’t unheard of. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao took home upwards of $100 million for their fight. However, fans didn’t agree with Canelo’s demand, as they expressed frustration with the champion on X (formerly Twitter).

Fan claims Canelo is scared of David Benavidez

After the interview went live, Canelo’s outrageous demands for the fight went viral on X, where several people shared the clip. One user labeled Canelo “the biggest liar in boxing” for demanding such an unbelievable amount while highlighting Canelo’s hypocrisy. Canelo had previously claimed that he would not fight a Mexican, but since he is fighting Munguia, the user claimed Canelo just doesn’t want to fight Benavidez.

Another user thought Canelo’s $150 million demand was to mask his fear of facing ‘The Mexican Monster.’ However, it’s also worth mentioning that if Canelo vs. Benavidez ever happens, it would be the biggest fight of the current decade, so Canelo rightfully wants a substantial payout for it.

Someone else suggested Canelo’s demand was a way of him looking to find a deal with the Saudi organizers, who have hosted several big events in the recent past.

While others were bashing Canelo Alvarez, this user seemed to have taken Canelo’s side. The user agreed with Canelo, claiming he could make the money he was being offered by fighting anyone. But a substantial offer needs to be made to arrange a big fight like Canelo vs. Benavidez. Notably, Canelo’s team was offered a sum of $55 million to fight Benavidez, but Eddie Reynoso denied any such offers were on the table.
