The year is off to a great start as it appears that the boxing fans will get to witness some huge fights. However, this cannot be said about the fight which true boxing fans have been dreaming about for a long time now. It’s the fight between the current undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez. Will the highly anticipated bout ever come to fruition?
No one knows the answer to the question. This is especially the case since it appeared that the two would exchange fists this year as Alvarez prepares to make a return to the ring on May 4th. However, despite being mandatory for Canelo’s WBC title, he is now going to fight Oleksandr Gvozdyk. A lot of people claim that Alvarez is afraid of facing Benavidez. Here’s what Jose Benavidez Sr. has to say about the reason behind the Mexican icon not fighting Benavidez.

Jose Benavidez Sr., father and trainer of undefeated super middleweight contender David Benavidez, dropped a bombshell in an interview. He believes Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed champion at 168 lbs., is avoiding a fight with his son due to fear of defeat.
“My Respect to Canelo,” Benavidez Sr. acknowledged, “I think he has worn his body with too many battles in camp, training and training camps and all that.” Furthermore, he pointed out, “He has a lot of fights, he has a lot of miles on his body, I believe that he knows that he’s not as strong as he used to be.”
Benavidez Sr. contrasts Canelo’s perceived decline with his son’s youthful vigor. “David is young 27 years old, hungry, and bigger and stronger,” he declared. “I think Canelo knows he doesn’t stand a chance. It’s a big risk, and he wants guaranteed wins, small guys coming up to lose.”
These bold claims have ignited boxing circles. Canelo, known for facing tough challenges, has yet to respond. Will he step up and silence his doubters, or will Benavidez Sr.’s words ring true? Only time, and potentially a future clash, will tell. In the meantime, Benavidez Sr. has also revealed how close the fight was to being made.
Canelo Alvarez threw Benavidez a bone
With the boxing world eagerly waiting for Canelo Alvarez’s next fight, the mystery surrounding his opponent deepens. While Jermall Charlo, Terence Crawford and David Benavidez were initially in the running, the latter seems to be out of the picture.

Benavidez’s promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz, briefly sent boxing fans into a frenzy with a since-deleted tweet suggesting a $55 million deal with Canelo’s team. However, negotiations hit a snag, and Benavidez was no longer the frontrunner.
Adding another twist to the tale, trainer Jose Benavidez Sr. revealed a surprising offer Canelo made during a recent interview. Canelo, it seems, is open to facing Benavidez, but with a significant catch: a mere $5 million purse. “They call me and they said that Canelo agreed to fight David Benavidez,” Benavidez Sr. explained, “But he was- the only way that he can make that fight is by only paying Benavidez the minimum.“ He added, “That’s the minimum. Right now David gets paid that for fighting other fighters”.
