A fight offer can vanish like a shadow in the night. Imagine the scenario: David Benavidez, poised for greatness, accepts a “minimum” offer to fight Canelo Alvarez. Then, silence. Both Canelo and another potential opponent, Jaime Munguia, disappear from the negotiation table.
Why the sudden retreat? Benavidez, unfazed, now plans a bold leap to light heavyweight to face Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June, leaving fans puzzled and intrigued. Is there more to this strategic withdrawal than meets the eye?

Jose Benavidez Sr. laid bare the details of a negotiation that seemed to promise an electrifying bout, only to end in an unexpected silence. “Like about a week and a half, we started negotiations with Jaime Munguia and they said that they want a 50-50. We said yes let’s make it happen,” he shared. However, the narrative took a swift turn when a potential fight with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was dangled before them.
“They said that the camp for Canelo Alvarez wanted to take that fight, but the only way that they would take the fight is that we will take the minimum,” Benavidez Sr. revealed. Demonstrating a fighter’s heart and an eagerness for the challenge, he agreed to the terms without a second thought. “I said sure no problem, we just want the opportunity to fight. Let’s make it happen, either way I know if we get to this fight things are going to get better anyways.”
Yet, after their agreement to take the minimum, an eerie silence followed. “So we said yes to it and then both of them disappeared, Munguia and Canelo disappeared,” he recounted. He suggested, “So I think they just wanted to test us and they thought I was going to ask for more money and they could have said that they did offer us and we wanted more money, but we were willing to take the minimum.”
Despite the unexpected collapse of negotiations, David Benavidez remains unfazed, planning his ascent to the light heavyweight division. But what was the minimum amount that David was offered?

A social media post highlighted Jose’s interview with Supreme Boxing, where he disclosed Canelo’s willingness to fight David Benavidez, but with a significant catch: a $5 million fight purse, labeled as the “minimum” by the boxing standards for such a high-caliber match. “They call me and they said that Canelo agreed to fight David Benavidez also. But he was- the only way that he can make that fight is by only paying Benavidez the minimum,” Jose Sr. recounted.
Despite promptly accepting this offer, signaling their readiness for the bout, the much-anticipated fight failed to materialize. Leaving fans and pundits alike pondering what could have been.
