After long last, Canelo Alvarez has decided who he will fight on May 4! The Mexican superstar will take on fellow countryman Jaime Munguia on the Cinco De Mayo weekend, expected to draw the Mexican crowd. However, the question that has been plaguing the boxing world is, does Munguia have a shot at winning or possibly knocking out Canelo? Manny Pacquiao’s former trainer, Freddie Roach, reveals!
Roach recently joined Munguia’s corner as the head trainer and has praiseworthy words for the undefeated Tijuana native. So, after Canelo separated from Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Championship to make the fight happen, Roach sheds light on what the fight may look like in T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada. The statement was made during Roach’s interview with Fight Hype yesterday.

Speaking to Roach, Hans Themistode from Fight Hype questioned the legendary coach about Munguia’s training. In response, Roach said, “He’s doing great. He’s a very good student. And he trains his a** off every day. He’s doing very well.” When Themistode brought up claims from Oscar De La Hoya about Munguia, where he claimed Muguia would easily beat Canelo, Roach confirmed, “He is…”
Canelo has fought several good opponents over the years, so it’s safe to say he has experienced a lot of different styles. So, when the reporter probed Roach about Munguia’s style against Canelo, Roach claimed it wouldn’t be the hardest, but Munguia could cause some trouble for Canelo. Furthermore, Themistode asked the question everybody wanted to know the answer to!

Can Munguia knock out Canelo? Roach stated, “I’m not expecting knockout, but the thing is, I think he can knock out that opponent, yes.” Meanwhile, Canelo has addressed allegations about him that suggest he is fighting Jaime Munguia because he is afraid of another fighter.

Before Canelo finalized his fight against Jaime Munguia, the whole of the boxing world wanted him to face David Benavidez. At one point, Benavidez was even his mandatory challenger, but that fight will not be happening anytime soon as Benavidez has decided to climb up to the light-heavyweight division to win all the titles there. So, fans and pundits alike have suggested Canelo is afraid and is trying his best to avoid Benavidez.

In response to this criticism, Canelo Alvarez has released a statement. The same was picked up by Michael Benson on X (formerly Twitter). Canelo said, “Yeah it always happens – Erislandy Lara, Austin Trout, Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, Gennady Golovkin, Daniel Jacobs, Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders. At the end of the day, I beat practically all of them. If I beat Benavidez, they’re gonna say, ‘Oh, why don’t you face this other guy?’ Look at my history, I’ve done everything in boxing. I’ve done it all.”

With that said, even though Mungia’s trainer, Freddie Roach, is confident about winning against Canelo Alvarez, only time will tell if Mexico’s Jaime Munguia can uphold Roach’s honor.
