Ring Magazine‘s ‘Prospect of the Year’ award recipient, Bruce Carrington, will fight Bernard Torres tonight. It might be the Brooklyn-born boxer’s first ESPN bout. He hopes that a victory will enable him to make waves in the 126-pound division. But the move might as well put him in the firing line for a threat coming up all the way from the shores of Japan.

The featherweight fight, an O’Shaquie FosterAbraham Nova undercard, takes place at Madison Square Garden Theater. The prolific fighter believes in Torres; he could be facing the toughest match of his two-year career. However, the resolute Brooklynite is confident that he possesses the perfect antidote to tackle any challenge that comes his way.

Completely in his elements, the 26-year-old boxer stood at 125.6 pounds during the weigh-in with the Philippines-born Norwegian Bernard Torres. Thereafter, the two young boxers finally faced off before the fight. FightHype caught up with Carrington. After the initial exchange, the reporter checked with ‘Shu Shu’ for his views on ‘The Monster’ making a move to the featherweight division.

We talked about Inoue probably coming up, possibly to 126. What do you think about his comments, uh, surrounding the fact that maybe American fighters don’t like to get hit we don’t like to get punched in the face?” the FightHype reporter asked.

Following Stephen Fulton, Naoya Inoue defeated Marlon Tapales to become the undisputed champion for the second time in a span of nearly 12 months. Though he has a title defense against Luis Nery in hand, the super bantam weight hasn’t shied away from sharing his ambitions of leapfrogging to the next weight class.

The question follows Inoue’s comments after the eighth-round win over Fulton.

Fighters, Poles Apart

I don’t know if it’s because he’s American, but he doesn’t like getting punched in the face. Their boxing style is different from Japanese fighters who fight with Yamato Damashii (Japanese spirit),” the undisputed champion told Ring Magazine during a Q&A session.

But Bruce Carrington believes ‘The Monster’ probably said that because of his experience fighting American boxers. During his over-a-decade-old career, the Japanese champion has come across only three American opponents, viz., Fulton, Donaire, and Antonio Nieves. Hence, according to ‘Shu Shu’, Naoya Inoue has yet to cross with a boxer of his caliber. And when he does, he will ensure that the latter ends up changing his opinion on American boxers.

I mean, you know, through his experiences, I see why he’s tried to say that, but he ain’t get one there with a dog like me, so, uh, when the time comes, he going to see what’s up, and I’m going definitely show him I’m make him a non-believer in that and that statement that he made for sure,” said Bruce Carrington.

Last year, an unbelievable itinerary saw Bruce Carrington participate in not one or two, but five fights, with the first one taking place on January 14. So undoubtedly, he hopes to open the year’s account on a happy note. The Top Rank event tonight will see O’Shaquie Foster defend his Super Featherweight title against Puerto Rico-born Nova.
