The World Boxing Council recently illuminated the boxing scene with a notable post on their Instagram. They energetically celebrated Saul “Canelo” Álvarez’s achievements in 2023. They declared,  “’Canelo’ remained very active in 2023 with two memorable fights. The first against John Ryder in his long-awaited return home and the second defeating Jermell Charlo in an overwhelming way. He masterfully conserved the undisputed super middleweight championship.”

This statement, laden with praise, highlights Álvarez’s dynamic year, showcasing his victories that resonated beyond the ring and into the hearts of fans worldwide. But were the fans in agreement with the WBC?

‘The fear factor: Is Alvarez avoiding Benavidez?

In response to the WBC’s announcement, the boxing community voiced a medley of opinions, each reflecting a unique perspective on Álvarez’s win. One fan, awed by Álvarez’s prowess, remarked, “The way Ryder got dropped! Crazy how people hate Canelo be like he had a bad performance lol.”

However, transitioning to a more critical view, another countered, “’Very active’ two fights, bro fought a bum and a champ two weights below fight Benavidez.” This response underscores a prevalent skepticism regarding the caliber of Álvarez’s opponents, igniting a debate over his choice of matches.

Adding to the mix, a supporter emphasized Álvarez’s stature, stating, “And still the face of boxing sells the most pay-per-view, attracts the most avid fans put on a spectacle. Every time he steps into the ring. Yeah, I’d say he’s still the face of boxing definitely.” This viewpoint highlights Álvarez’s influence on the sport beyond mere victories.

Yet, another fan questioned the selection of his opponents, pondering, “Canelo says Benavidez hasn’t fought anyone and doesn’t deserve a shot at him. My question is who has this B level boxer fought and why did he get a shot at Canelo? I’m beginning to think Canelo is in fact scared of Benavidez.” This challenges the narrative around Álvarez’s readiness to face all contenders.
