‘The show must go on’ – a universal truth, the bottom line in life mirrors in boxing as well. Ryan Garcia might have found a better alternative to fighting Devin Haney. Days ago, fans became aware of his team reaching out to Haney for a fight deal. Now the internet is busy discussing Garcia shaking hands with ‘Rollie’ Romero for his next bout.
So what happens to Devin Haney now? As the good old adage goes, the journey continues. Last year, Devin Haney defended his undisputed title against technical stalwart Vasyl Lomachenko. He subsequently climbed up a division to challenge Regis Prograis for his belt. In front of a sold-out crowd at San Francisco’s Chase Center, round-by-round, ‘The Dream’ demolished ‘Rougarou’ to become the new title holder. The newly crowned WBC light welterweight champion, it seems, might have quite a few options to play around with at the moment. Eddie Hearn was in conversation with Matchroom Boxing‘s channel. He shared a few details on what might be in store for the rising star of boxing.

Eddie Hearn said that a fight against number one-ranked challenger Sandor Martin might be up for grabs. However, he also added that the title defense might not be the first priority for Devin Haney. Then, on a final note, the veteran boxing promoter shared that there’s a high chance of ‘The Dream’ frog leaping to the next division.
“Yeah, that is a mandatory; that’s due. I mean, it’s not the flavor of the month that fight, and with no disrespect to Sandor, but, um, you know, at some point he might have to deal that maybe there’s a move to 147; we’ll have to see,” said Eddie Hearn when the report asked whether Haney would fight after the Spanish light welterweight.
Martin, a former European light welterweight, grabbed attention last year. Going against Teofimo Lopez for his WBO (International Light Welterweight) title, he proved a tough nut to crack. The latter finally had to settle for a split-decision victory against the 30-year-old southpaw from Barcelona. A year before, he had defeated former world champion Mickey Garcia.

As much as the fight against Sandor Martin appears on the cards, a move to the 147-pound division brings its own set of challenges. First and foremost, he will come directly into the crosshairs of Terence Crawford. Secondly, even if he is not able to meet ‘Bud’, Haney might have to contemplate a face-off against Jaron Ennis. One cannot count out former champions Errol Spence Jr. and Josh Taylor either.
But as some of the followers on X/Twitter asked, why can’t Devin Haney go against the likes of Teofimo Lopez and Subriel Matias? A move towards title unification. After all, the show must go on.
