Who would have thought that a young-rising star like Javon Walton would put his acclaimed acting career on hold? Well, for the sake of his passion, the Euphoria star has done it. On the precipice of his global professional debut, one would assume that he takes to the canvas as a newbie to the sport. Well, make no mistake. He’s anything but a newbie in the world of boxing.
Tomorrow, 2nd March, the 17-year-old will fight on the glamorous San Juan, Puerto Rico card, co-headlined by Jake Paul and Amanda Serrano. As he takes on his 0-1, opponent, Joshua Toress, one question emerges. Is the fighter equipped enough to handle the heat of the boxing world?
Javon Walton had a run-in with Floyd Mayweather’s Protégé

At age 4, a young Walton expressed his desire to box. His father, DJ, not opposed to the idea, however, held qualms about taking such a young boy to the gym. DJ, having trained in the sport in his earlier days, took his son under his tutelage. As the fighter grew older, things got more serious. At 8, he started competing. His parents took him to the Ringside World Championships in Kansas City. Over there, he did not perform that well. However, with resilience up his sleeve, he continued.

In an earlier interview, he had counted about 85 amateur bouts on his portfolio before his upcoming pro debut. A boxing record keeper, Boxrec, however, notes his Amateur record at 20-9 apart from another professional league fight. He has also had the privilege of fighting against Floyd Mayweather’s protégé, Curmel Moton, twice, during his amateur boxing days.

Next, with a 10-fight winning streak, he grabbed the silver in Junior Olympics, twice. Meanwhile, he was competing in gymnastics, coupled with his father’s entry in USA Boxing. At 10, Walton had decided on pro-boxing as his destiny. The first point on this path? The Olympics. However, unexpectedly, his career in acting took him in a different direction.
Realizing how significant the opportunity was to work on Euphoria, he put his boxing dream on pause. Years later, he’s now returned to his passion, ready to take on the professional world of boxing.
Revamping the boxing dream

For the world who knows him only through the role of ‘Ashtray’, the character was entirely dependent on his boxing skills for its inception. None of his acting stints would have materialized if a viral clip of him boxing would not have caught the eye of Steve Harvey, who invited him to his talk show in 2017. In that interview, ‘Wanna’ showcased his impressive boxing skills, complete with a demonstration of him hitting the mitts. While that led to his entry into the acting world, his name continued to blossom in the boxing realm.

“Hopefully, in the next five years, I’ll be a world champion,” noted the 17-year-old to ESPN ahead of his global debut. On Saturday, he takes on a 32-year-old opponent, almost twice his age. However, that sort of challenge perhaps does not fright him. He is the son of a boxer trainer, after all.
