After the recent stoppage win against Oscar Duarte on December 2, Ryan Garcia initially called out 140-pound WBA belt holder Rolando Romero in a post-fight interview. However, in a swift change of direction, Garcia decided to redirect his focus and energy toward Devin Haney. He’s the recently crowned WBC titlist, and left the potential matchup with ‘Rolly’ behind, to chase a bigger matchup.
At that time, Garcia said, “I’m sorry Rollies – you and your team work way too slowly and you were way too indecisive. I didn’t know if you wanted to box or vacation. Devin Haney and I are in negotiations – respect that.” However, things have changed now as Garcia is moving forward with Rolly Romero’s fight again over Devin Haney. Rolly Romero has provided his response to the callout.

Rolly Romero seems ready for the challenge
Ryan Garcia took to social media on Saturday to announce a change of heart regarding his next fight. Contrary to his earlier decision to face Devin Haney, Garcia expressed a new desire to step into the ring against Rolando Romero. In a post on X, Garcia conveyed his “intent” to pursue a bout with Romero, citing his belief that this matchup would carry more significance than a fight against Haney.

He did this after the 50k PPV numbers got leaked for Haney’s previous fight against Regis Prograis. Garcia believes he can make bigger numbers of sales fighting Romero than Haney, as of now. So after he called him out, Rolly Romero instantly accepted his challenge and posted a photoshopped picture of himself and Garcia. He was standing tall with his WBA belt, while facing Ryan Garcia, and also added a ‘shushing face’ emoji, with a hashtag indicating that the fight may take place in ‘Spring 2024’.
So, it’s safe to say that Rolly Romero has accepted the challenge from the other side. However, things happened pretty fast as Haney and Garcia almost looked like a done deal.

After Devin Haney’s victory over Regis Prograis, discussions buzzed about a potential blockbuster Pay Per View clash in 2024 against Gervonta Davis. However, recent statements from Bill and Devin Haney indicate that Davis is exploring other opponents for a potential March return. Notably, Haney is not among those considered for the upcoming bout.

Haney explained, “Tank doesn’t want to fight. If he really wanted to fight, he would be trying to build up the fight. Instead, he’s trying to knock it down or say I’m only selling because of this or that.” Besides that, he was quite ready to face Ryan Garcia. He was even excited for it, as he said, “That’s a possibility, that’s a mega-fight. I’ve been calling out Ryan for years now, and it’s good to hear that he finally wants to fight.” Even Haney’s father Bill Haney showed interest in Garcia.
