Let’s hope Chris Eubank Jr. and Liam Smith get third time lucky. Their rematch, reportedly scheduled for June 17, received a new date, July 1. However, the second attempt to bring around an all-British sequel received an untimely jolt. However, perhaps gauging the fans’ despair, whose patience nears its expiry, probably precipitated a new date. Both former world title holders seem keen on settling the argument that commenced early this year.

Called ‘Unleashed,’ Eubank Jr. and Smith met for the first time at Manchester’s AO Arena on January 21. The son of one of boxing’s greatest, Chris Eubank Sr. was shocked as the Liverpudlian knocked him out in the fourth round. Thankfully, the former retained the right to invoke the rematch clause per the signed agreement. And he proceeded exactly as expected. According to RadioTimes, the rematch planned for June 17 went on the back burner only to tag besides the Savannah Marshall and Franchón Crews-Dezurn main card on July 1.

However, an injury resulted in Liam Smith pulling out. Reportedly he needed more time to heal up. Speaking to BBC 5 Live Boxing, Smith’s promoter Ben Shalom said, “I expect it to happen and [for] it to happen very soon now that Liam has confirmed his 100% fitness. We’ve sent the date over to Wasserman [Eubank’s promoters], and hopefully, we can confirm something next week.

It must be noted that Eubank Jr. had a big match lined up in October last year. He stood against another boxing legend, Nigel Benn‘s son, Conor Benn. However, before they could meet, BBBofC pulled the brakes as reports of Benn failing drug tests filtered in. Thus, Eubank Jr., who hadn’t fought since February last year, finally met Smith for a non-title fight, only to face his first stoppage loss.
