Infinity Ward’s Call of Duty series is regarded as one of the most popular first-person shooter games (FPS). So, when Call of Duty: Warzone dropped earlier this year, a multitude of fans pounced on it immediately. In fact, within 24 hours, Warzone amassed around 6 million users. The best part is that the game handily beat the likes of Apex Legends, which amassed 2.5 million downloads. Meanwhile, around 2 million Nintendo Switch users downloaded Fortnite within 24 hours.

Coming back to Call of Duty: Warzone, the game reached the 30 million downloads milestone within two weeks of its release. Meanwhile, Apex Legends took a week to reach 25 million downloads.

Admittedly, timing was everything for Infinity Ward. The developer released Warzone around the time that the COVID-19 pandemic struck. So, with people confined to their homes, many turned to video games and the virtual world to satisfy their amusement. It is also note-worthy that COD: Warzone snagged 15 million downloads within four days.

Admittedly, the game is trying to take the fight to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Apex Legends and Fortnite, their biggest rivals. Needless to say, the FPS game is holding its own among the big boys and is even trying to surpass its competitors.

In other words, the shooter video game has surely surpassed the likes of Apex Legends and Fortnite. Admittedly, four months is still a long way away but Call of Duty is halfway to the 100 million downloads milestone. The only question is, “How long will it take to reach it?”

With the COVID-19 pandemic showing no signs of slowing down, the gaming industry is booming. The bad news is, there is no timeline on when the pandemic will die down or fade away.
