Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War Alpha build players staged a protest many might have missed. Since releasing the alpha build of the multiplayer in Cold War, players have complained about skill-based matchmaking (SBMM).

SBMM, as it is popularly known, has a notorious reputation among CoD players. After the alpha weekend, more players have come forward with complaints.

From pros to streamers, everyone debated this issue on Reddit. u/MerKAndy wrote that after just 10 hours of playing the alpha, his matches felt “like COD League finals.”?

Thanks for enabling SBMM during an alpha to give us a true glimpse of how this game will play for slightly above average players on launch. Now I know better than to spend ?60 on another year of this.

“It hurts because I really enjoy how this cod plays and I enjoy the changes they’ve made. But 10 hours in and I’ve already lost all motivation to play as I can already predict the outcome of the game before it’s even begun. So thanks Activision, I can tell we’re in for another great year of SBMM.

Another user, FrostyTheSunbro, emitted similar vibes.

Not going to lie, it was soul-crushing and sucked the fun out of the game. Then suddenly I went 37-5 and then went back to 6-8 kills and 15+ deaths. Systems broken as all hell. Have a friend who has a 0.8 KD, went to play by himself. Was doing great and his 1.1 KD in the Alpha has dropped to a grand .6 KD because he went against the entire COD League and got destroyed.

Players protest by reverse boosting in Call of Duty Cold War

The irksome SBMM forced players to protest inside the game. Players started ‘reverse boosting’ themselves in every lobby. ‘Reverse boosting’ refers to killing oneself in the game continuously to decrease skill level.

This would eventually allow them to match with lower-tier lobbies.

Even Scump posted a video of himself reverse boosting after letting out his frustration with SBMM in a previous tweet.

While the community did not seem very kind towards the devs at Treyarch, there is still some hope that they will introduce a new ranking system in the final version of Cold War. After all, the objective of releasing an alpha version is to find the issues with the game, and SBMM seems like a very apparent one at the moment.

The beta for Call of Duty Cold War releases on October 8, on PS4. Watch this space for more Call of Duty news.
