Despite never winning the coveted Mr. Olympia title, Flex Wheeler’s name is often uttered along with the greatest bodybuilders in the sport. Many fans believe The Sultan of Symmetry is the most deserving uncrowned Mr. Olympia. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger once said Wheeler was his favorite bodybuilder. However, a rare kidney disease cut the bodybuilding icon’s career short.

While the four-time Arnold Classic winner got a kidney transplant in 2003, his health issues have persisted. In 2017, Wheeler returned to the bodybuilding stage for one last time. However, in 2019, the bodybuilding icon’s health took a turn for the worse, and Wheeler had to choose between losing his leg or his life. So, doctors had to partially amputate the 58-year-old’s right leg. Yet, despite the challenges, Wheeler doesn’t miss leg days.

Earlier, the bodybuilding icon uploaded a video on Instagram. While the 58-year-old often posts videos on social media, he rarely showcases himself working out. Yet, the personal trainer showed he doesn’t just train others in the gym. The five-time Ironman Pro winner hopped onto the leg press machine and started doing leg presses. Wheeler was wearing a red prosthetic on his right leg.

The pain Wheeler felt was evident on his face. He struggled with every rep and even grabbed the hamstring of his partially amputated right leg. However, The Sultan of Symmetry didn’t stop the exercise. In fact, the 58-year-old former bodybuilding champion did 20 reps before stopping. Bodybuilding fans saw Wheeler’s effort and felt inspired.
