Saturday’s game between Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever became the talk of the internet; not because of the close contest but because of what Chennedy Carter did in the game. She dropped 19 points, 6 assists, and an uncalled-for foul on the WNBA’s sweetheart, Caitlin Clark. The anger spilled on the internet for the unwarranted foul, but her teammates, especially Angel Reese, rallied behind Carter and questioned the growing obsession with Clark. But for Sulem Urbina, it was well deserved.

During their collegiate years, Reese, 22, and Clark, 22, went a long time back. They clashed in the 2022 championship title game and then again in 2023. Reese, representing LSU back then, had even taunted Clark. But ever since the two moved to the WNBA this year, Clark has burst on the scene because of her marketability and exciting style of play. That has also helped the WNBA garner enough eyeballs. However, Reese didn’t believe the credit went to Clark.

But the Chicago Sky star also agreed, not minding being a loudmouth, if that helped the women’s basketball. Reese said, “It all started from the national championship game. I’ve been dealing with this for two years now and understanding like, yeah, negative things have probably been said about me. But honestly, I’ll take that because look where women’s basketball is.” She then pointed out the recent buzz about women’s basketball, people pulling up the games, celebrities attending games, and the sold-out arenas.

“And just looking at that, I’ll take that role. I’ll take the bad guy role, and I’ll continue to take that and be that for my teammates… I’ll look back in 20 years and be like, yeah, the reason why we’re watching women’s basketball is not just because of one person. It’s because of me, too,” the Maryland native added. However, it seemed not everyone aligned their opinions the same way.

Urbina, 33, turned to her X-handle and replied to Reese’s latest comments. The Mexican fighter admitted she started watching the WNBA because of Clark. The spark between Reese and Clark pulled Urbina to women’s basketball, and she stayed a fan because of Clark’s aggressive play. She wrote, “I started watching because of the way CC and her went at it in the championship. Now I’ll be honest after seeing CC play I watch because of her.”

Urbina’s remarks contribute to the already vigorous support for Clark, while Reese and Carter had openly expressed discontent with how the media and internet treated the Des Moines native differently.

When asked about Carter’s brash foul on Clark, Reese emphasized Carter’s apology. She believed that her teammate “probably” wouldn’t commit the same mistake again. Meanwhile, Carter had a different take when she declared, “We didn’t hit her like she was out on the streets. It’s just basketball.”

Carter, 25, had posted similar scathing remarks when she asked what Clark brought to the table “beside three-point shooting”. It seems the tensions are still soaring. It remains to see how all this affects Clark, who is currently averaging 15.6 points per game this season.
