Caitlin Clark snubbed by Team USA—Is this a massive oversight or justified decision?

Caitlin Clark continues to dominate headlines because of her actions on the court. And this time, Jake Paul has taken notice! Even though the Indiana Fever rookie is on a break, an interesting factoid about Clark’s 26 games in the WNBA has been making the rounds on the internet, and let’s just say it’s legitimately staggering.

Despite getting snubbed from the Team USA roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics, who will face Japan Monday afternoon, CC has achieved yet another feat. According to a tweet from StatMamba, “Caitlin Clark already has more career assists than 75.4% of all players in WNBA history”. Interestingly, the league’s official page shed more light on the latest factoid.

The Iowa native is currently ranked 268th all time with 213 assists, while their list features 659 players, which ends with players who have a minimum of two assists. This means players with one and zero didn’t make the cut. So, the numbers appear to be close to perfect, if not spot on. Regardless, reacting to this peace of update on X, Jake Paul responded, “Let that sink in…26 games in. W”.

But it really shouldn’t come as a surprise because CC already set the record for the most assists and total points generated in a single match earlier this year against the Dallas Wings with 19 dimes, even though they lost the match. Not to mention, she is not that far from breaking the rookie record for assists in a season.

Four-time WNBA All-Star Ticha Penicheiro had 225 total dimes back in 1998, meaning CC is 12 passes away from making history again. And let’s not forget, she is well on her way to breaking the record for total assists in a season as well. Connecticut Sun player Alyssa Thomas had a total of 316 passes in 2023, which doesn’t look too far away for Clark. In the meantime, Dawn Staley shared an interesting take on Clark’s Team USA omission!

Since the roster for the Paris 2024 Olympics team was drafted, many fans and experts questioned Clark’s absence. And now South Carolina head coach and USA Basketball selection committee member Dawn Staley seems to be second guessing the committee as well. On Sunday, Stanley told NBC’s Mike Tirico, “Caitlin is just a rookie in the WNBA, wasn’t playing bad, but wasn’t playing like she’s playing now”.

After becoming the No. 1 pick of the draft from Indiana Fever, CC was in a bit of an adjustment period in her rookie season. Despite that, she immediately stepped into a key role. But her performance of late convinced Staley, “If we had to do it all over again, the way that she’s playing, she would be in really high consideration of making the team”. To put that into perspective, Clark shot just 38% from the field in nine games in May.

But in July’s six games, she was shooting 43% from the field despite shooting 27% from behind the 3-point line. Clark was also averaging 12.5 assists/game in those contests, which was a drastic increase from averaging 7 assists/game in the first two months of the season.

Having said that, Caitlin Clark is definitely turning heads, like she has been doing since her days playing for Iowa. Her new achievement with the assists in just 26 games perfectly predicts a bright future for the 22-year-old. While she didn’t make the Olympics this year, 2028 could look a lot different for the Indiana Fever rookie. Do you agree?
