Lightweight boxer Katie Taylor secured a dominant points victory over Delfine Persoon to go 2-0 in the head-to-head clashes. The champion retained her belts, and Twitter was abuzz with praise for the undefeated (16-0) pugilist. Admiration came in the form of combat sports personality Conor McGregor, who sang his country person’s praises.

The former UFC champion and one-time boxer wrote, “Huge congrats Katie Taylor!!! Put that one to bed for sure, no questions! Top drawer stuff as always from Ireland’s greatest! (Katie Taylor)”

Taylor was certainly in the zone at Matchroom Boxing’s fight camp. She made the most of a familiar opponent and seemed to have worked on a few changes from the first match from last June.

‘The Bray Bomber’ claimed the WBC and The Ring titles on the back of her first majority decision win. This time she did not leave any doubts in the judges’ minds as she did not miss her shots by a long way to retain all five belts.

She won six rounds in the eyes of two judges who scored the ten-round contest 96-94 and seven rounds according to the third who had the bout at 97-93.

Katie Taylor marches on in style

The Irish boxer will look for new challenges following her 16th professional victory. A popular option would be for her to fight yet another old opponent, Jessica McCaskill. ‘CasKILLA’ stunned the world a week ago when she ended Cecilia Braekhus’ undefeated streak to claim the welterweight titles.

Taylor too has a welterweight belt, which she won in her last fight in 2019. This was against Christina Linardatou. Moreover, McCaskill called out Taylor after her ‘Cinderella Story’ triumph last week. She didn’t mention whether it would be a lightweight or welterweight bout.

However, Taylor must have been impressive to earn praise from Conor McGregor. The ‘Notorious’ was a one-time boxer himself and had a decent outing in his debut in the squared circle.

He has been pretty active in boxing circles lately and has teased a return. But now, his return seems more plausible than ever. He may try to bring ‘The Money Belt’ to Ireland and be “Ireland’s greatest.” But for now, that title is safe with Taylor.
