A year after the Rio 2016 Olympics, Phelps had commented about the “Money Fight” between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. According to him, McGregor was taking on the greatest challenge ever.
Michael Phelps on Floyd Mayweather vs Conor McGregor
In August 2017, ‘The Notorious’ stepped out of the octagon and entered the squared circle to take on one of the best boxers of all time. Unsurprisingly, Floyd Mayweather defeated McGregor. However, Michael Phelps acknowledged how great of a challenge it is to venture into a different sport altogether.
Phelps said, “It shows how hard it is to do other sports, that fight between [Conor McGregor] and Floyd was great.” He also mentioned that he knew how the fight would pan out.
He said, “I knew it would be very hard for him to win because Floyd is Floyd. That guy is pretty damn good – plus it is another sport.” Being the best at his own sport, Phelps understands how difficult it is to have the same impact on a different sport.

When the Olympic legend heard about the Irishmen going up against Mayweather, he took it upon himself to create an event as well. Hence he called out Conor McGregor on Twitter to a swimming duel by posting a picture of him and McGregor against each other in swimming caps.
