The July 20th Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight was one of the most anticipated boxing events of the year. However, fans will have to wait a few more months as Tyson suffered an ulcer flare-up, and now the bout is postponed for November. But Jake Paul being a business-oriented person, decided to still enter the ring on July 20th, but with a different opponent. It raises the question of whether Paul would be better off focusing on training for his fight with Mike Tyson rather than engaging in a fight next month.
‘The Problem Child’ announced that he will be facing former UFC contender and BKFC fighter Mike Perry. Following this, former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier shared his concern about what might go wrong with Paul in his fight with Perry. Cormier is a seasoned fighter, and he is also a UFC commentator. An experienced fighter like DC knows that fighting one opponent after another is a bum-rush, and is not at all a good idea.

While talking about the situation in a video on his YT channel, Cormier stated, “We get news that Jake is fighting with Mike Perry on July 20th. So six weeks, they’re gonna fight very soon. He’s gonna turn around and fight Mike Tyson again in the fall, it’s fast. Does he just anticipate he will take no damage against Mike Perry? November 15 is the date for Paul vs Tyson at AT&T stadium. Now he’s gonna fight July 20th and November 15th. Seems fast, it seems faster maybe.” DC thinks Jake Paul will suffer injuries from his fight with Perry, which will make it harder for him to perform at his best against Tyson in November.
Since boxing is a sport where the fighter takes a lot of hits to their face and head, going from one fight to the next in a span of 3 months seems foolhardy to Cormier. Furthermore, Paul had a contract with PFL and was supposed to make his MMA debut in 2024. With two fights already in the pipeline for this year, his MMA debut might not happen anytime this year, according to the UFC commentator. “And what happened to MMA? I thought Jake was gonna fight MMA. What happened to that? I thought he was gonna fight in the PFL. One thing you can’t question is the kid is fighting,” DC further added.
Well, Paul is not going up against any random 57-year-old boxer. He is going to face ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ – Mike Tyson. You have to enter the ring with everything you have to defeat Tyson. Although Paul has an advantage because of his youth and taller stature, it is still going to be a tough fight for him. But what about his fight with Mike Perry?

Jake Paul gets validation for facing a fighter not outside his prime
In 2018, Paul stepped into the boxing ring for the first time as an influencer. The social media celebrity then decided to turn pro in boxing. He deserves the credit for bringing new eyes to the sport, which eventually makes more revenue and is a good thing for the sport as a whole. However, fans often target him for not fighting a legitimate boxer or even a fighter in his prime. Up till now, he has only faced Tommy Fury, one real boxer. The remaining bouts he had were against diminished UFC fighters with little real boxing experience as well as with boxers who hadn’t had an actual fight in a year or two.
Jake Paul is also being criticized for fighting Perry since the latter is not as popular and doesn’t have a proper boxing background. Despite this, CBS combat sports analyst Luke Thomas lauded Paul for finally fighting an opponent who is not all the way out of his physical prime. Thomas stated, “Of course, he’s fought Tommy Fury [who] was aged 23 when they fought which is not physical prime, but certainly good physical condition. [But] this is like the peak of his [Perry] powers all coming together.”

Well, we can just hope that Paul’s fight against Perry turns out to be an exciting showdown with both fighters equally giving a hard time to each other, unlike most of his fights. Meanwhile, what are your thoughts on Daniel Cormier’s remarks about the Problem Child? Share it in the comments below.
