September is shaping to be the month to look out for combat sports fans, with three stacked up cards, including Canelo Alvarez, Anthony Joshua, and Dana White at the helm of a UFC event. However, two among them are on the same date, September 14, as the UFC and the PBC are trying to bank on the Mexican Independence Day weekend. However, it seems the UFC CEO is walking a very thin line, as he tries to navigate how to rack up profit after going one-on-one with the face of boxing.
White, 55, has been vocal about his discontent with MGM for first giving the date to Al Haymon’s PBC and then for guaranteeing the gate revenue for the event as well. Talking at the Contender Series event, Dana White said, “MGM’s guaranteeing the gate for that [Canelo] fight. Yeah, they’re guaranteeing the gate. So, why would they not go on that date if MGM is going to put up all the money?”
The UFC lynchpin meant that MGM officials bought the premier tickets on their own and later intended to distribute them to its best customers. However, that might not be the case. GiveMeSports’ Alan Dawson turned to his X handle and revealed the conversation he had with someone involved in the upcoming Alvarez vs. Berlanga event. He revealed that MGM hadn’t guaranteed gate for boxing events for “a while.”

The UFC has poured in over $20 million for its Noche UFC event at the Sphere. But having Alvarez, 34, fight on the same night and in the same vicinity is disrupting their plans and might as well turn out to be a disastrous event. The Mexican champion, on the other hand, has brushed aside the idea of thwarting the UFC event.

Alvarez, at 61-2-2, in a conversation with BoxingScene, admitted that he didn’t take the fight with Edgar Berlanga to compete with the UFC, but he wanted to fight on his own dates. He revealed, “I didn’t do this fight [to compete with the UFC]. I don’t want to bother anybody. But I like to fight on my dates. In September, I have my fans. I’m glad and very thankful about that. I just do my job, and that’s it.”
