The debate about MMA vs. boxing continues to boil. But this time around, there is an added flavor of rivalry and a quest to prove their worth as an A-lister. The rhetoric remains the same, though. What happens in a real fight between Claressa Shields and Cris Cyborg, who are at each other’s throats for a while now? It seems the latter has given a sneak peek into the future.
The two fighters, both signed under the PFL banner, have teased a fight for long. Cyborg, 39, uploaded a clip on her social media handles as she addressed their recent encounter when the two debated the weight class they would agree to fight at. While the former UFC champion pressed for 147, ‘GWOAT’ argued for 154. Shields, 29, has won world titles in multiple divisions. But she recently moved up to the heavyweight division, which might not allow her to shed that much weight.
However, the Brazilian fighter slammed Shields, 29, and persisted in making the fight happen at 147. What’s more? She believed if a boxing fight was not possible, then the American fighter could sign up with the PFL MMA and have a shot at her in the open weight categories. The result of all this? To make it a “real fight,” in her own words.

Cyborg, at 4-0 in pro boxing, wrote, “In a real fight I suplex @Claressashields on her head. If she wants a boxing match @MarkTaffetMedia tell her to put down the cookies and chips and make 147. If she can’t make weight, tell her to sign the @PFLMMA deal and we can do it at an open weight, no weigh in.”

Shields, at 15-0, also has ventured into MMA and most notably fought under the PFL banner, where she racked up an impressive record of 2-1. The Flint native’s last fight inside the SmartCage came earlier this year, and she has teased a return to the cage. It seems like a perfect opportunity to do it.

The two-division undisputed champion didn’t hold back after Cyborg’s remarks. She took to her X handle and invited the MMA fighter to take a fight with her. She penned, “Cris talking bout she a suplex me on my head 😂😂😂 yeah ok. Try it !? That’s all you gotta do is try it.”

Interestingly, Shields has teased a permanent move up to 154 and the fans could expect her to fight at 154 earlier next year. That’s the reason she is holding on to her condition of fighting at 154 against Cyborg. Otherwise, the world champion would have to go through the weight-cutting and gaining process once again, eventually detailing her plans to reign supreme at another division. Meanwhile, Cyborg might have a fight or two left in her tank before she hangs up her gloves.
