On Sunday, airline staff removed former UFC Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov from a flight heading from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. The humiliating incident occurred after ‘The Eagle’ got into an argument with a crew member over being seated in the emergency exit row. As the video of the incident went viral on social media, the flight crew members faced a huge backlash from MMA fans and personalities. Meanwhile, Khabib and the airline authorities have come up with conflicting accounts.

“Lady who comes to me with questions was very rude from the very beginning, even though I speak very decent English and can understand everything and agreed to assist, she still insists on removing me from my seat. What was the base for that, racial, national, or other one, I’m not sure,” Khabib posted on social media. On the other hand, on Monday, the airlines issued a statement to MMA Fighting addressing the altercation while denying that Khabib was singled out due to his ethnicity.

It claimed, “Customer Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was seated in an exit row, was asked multiple times if he was willing and able to assist in the event of an emergency. According to the flight attendant, Mr. Nurmagomedov did not respond, despite repeated attempts, which placed him in non-compliance with FAA requirements. The flight attendant informed Mr. Nurmagomedov that he could be moved to a different upgraded seat or exit the plane.” The statement also alleged that the videos circulated did not show the full interaction. Amid all the claims and counter-claims, Ryan Garcia‘s mother, Lisa Garcia, also shared her views on the incident.

Garcia’s mother commented on the viral video uploaded by ‘Happy Punch’ which captured the entire incident. She wrote, “This is so wrong on so many levels,” as she referred to the rude behavior of the staff. She was in utter disbelief at the incident and even laid down a suggestion for Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Lisa added, “I hope he gets an attorney to look into the influence of the staff,” implying that the former lightweight champion should sue the airlines for their wrong behavior. According to her, the former champion should at least get some legal help because the incident ‘Made no sense,” in her eyes. But not all are on the same page in the matter.

UFC veteran Chael Sonnen has taken the side of the flight staff. While he does empathize with fans who supported Khabib, Sonnen asserts that he has been in the emergency exit seat in the past and the rules were clear. The person in question must verbally and physically acknowledge the airline staff with an affirmative response. “As nicely as I want to be, this isn’t a close call, Khabib, gotta get off the plane,” Sonnen said.

According to the viral video, the flight crew removed Nurmagomedov from the emergency exit row because they assumed that his limited English vocabulary might create inconvenience during an emergency for other passengers. However, he was conversing with the flight attendant quite comfortably in English in the clip, making the removal even more confusing. In fact, Michael Chandler took a jab at the airlines for this reasoning.

“Can you imagine, an emergency happens on your plane and you would prefer a “perfect” speaking human instead of one of the greatest athletes of all time because you’re “uncomfortable” with his ability to speak English(which is very good, btw) – this is bizarre. Not only was he the most physically capable human being on the plane but I’m pretty sure the ONLY qualification to sitting in the exit row is being able to say the word ‘yes.’,” Chandler wrote on X. So was the flight crew really rude to Khabib?

The viral footage revealed that the UFC star was sitting in a window seat in the emergency exit row. Before takeoff, the flight attendant, following her usual protocol, asked Nurmagomedov whether he speaks English. Upon receiving the answer, the staff determined that the UFC star wouldn’t be able to assist his co-passengers in case of an emergency.

The viral footage further revealed the heated argument between the duo as the supervisor declared, “Okay, so what we’re gonna do is we either gonna have you switch your seats, cause my flight attendants are not allowing you to sit in the exit row or you’re gonna have to get off this plane,” in quite a rude tone.

The confrontation took Khabib Nurmagomedov aback as he mentioned how he had fully complied with the flight crew throughout the onboarding process. “It’s not fair. When I was in check-in, they asked me do I know English… and I say yes. Then why you guys do this?” exclaimed a visibly irritated Nurmagomedov.

However, the hostess rejected his plea, claiming that “It is fair,” before calling her supervisor, who asked the 29-0 fighter to deplane. Despite this humiliation, Khabib Nurmagomedov left the plane alongside his friend without creating much of a commotion.

Once again, the incident is quite unfortunate and has enraged fans across the globe. Fans are asking the airlines to take some action against the flight attendant as they found her behavior rude. Furthermore, the latest comment by Ryan Garcia’s mother also shows that most are siding with the former UFC star. Only time will tell whether Khabib Nurmagomedov will take legal action or not.
