In the world of combat sports, there has always been talk about a fight between trained professionals and street brawlers. Recently, boxing legend Mike Tyson ignited this discussion by boldly stating that fighters in the UFC and boxing are not good street fighters. Tyson, a former heavyweight champion in boxing, knows perfectly well the brutality of combat sports.

However, growing up in the harsh streets of Brooklyn he also knows what it is like fighting on the streets. In addition, this remark has piqued curiosity and raised questions about the contrasting skills and approaches between trained athletes and those who engage in spontaneous street altercations.

In a recent episode of his podcast Hotboxin’, along with former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, Tyson stated that street brawlers were better at fighting than professional fighters.

You know something about fighting. The people fighting in the Ufc and boxing. They’re not street fighters, not good street fighters at all in the ring. They kick anybody. They’re great champions,” he said.

Trained fighters in the UFC and boxing world undergo years of rigorous training and practice to master their craft. They also develop a repertoire of skills encompassing striking and grappling. However, Usman revealed what makes street fighting different from fighting in a ring or cage.

After Tyson’s bold claim, Usman also gave some reasons why street fighters could have an upper hand. He stated that, unlike professional fighting which is a competition and has rules, street fighting does not follow any. Moreover, the unpredictability of a street fight only adds to the dangers which cannot be replicated in a competition.

The crazy thing is, there’s just something about that because it’s a competition at the end of the day. So, knowing that it’s a competition, there’s an end goal, and there’s a time limit, it’s going to be stopped at a certain point. In street fighting here’s that level of uncertainty; you don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Usman.

Street brawlers operate in an entirely different realm than UFC fighters or boxers. These individuals often find themselves in spontaneous, unregulated altercations where there are no rules or guidelines to govern the fight. However, the distinction between trained fighters and street brawlers lies not only in their physical abilities but also in the environment in which their skills are tested.
