Is Jon Jones truly the GOAT, or does he need to face Tom Aspinall to prove it?

UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones sailed his way to a stunning stoppage victory over UFC legend Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 after landing a picture-perfect spinning back kick to the body. While many would have much preferred ‘Bones’ fight interim UFC heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall, Muhammad Ali’s grandson, Nico Ali Walsh seems content with Jones’ latest win.

Aspinall came to possess the interim belt last November when the Jones vs. Miocic fight fell through due to an injury Jones suffered. Since then, Jones has refused to square off against the Brit, who was in the audience at the Madison Square Garden to watch UFC 309 on Saturday. Regardless, Jones was undeniably impressive against Miocic.

‘Bones’ dominated the 42-year-old in the first round, tripping his fellow countryman and raining down elbows for the majority of the round. Despite Miocic’s resilience, he never truly was a threat to the 37-year-old, who looked better than ever, finishing the skirmish in the third round. Jones had even rushed to deliver some last-second ground and pound.

However, referee Herb Dean quickly ended the fight, with Jones retaining his heavyweight title. Having made a spectacular comeback after nearly two years, Jones took to Instagram, sharing a still of his spinning back kick, and captioned the post, “#UFC309 ladies and gentlemen.” This later caught Nico Ali Walsh’s eye, who decided to take action.

Turning to his Instagram story, the grandson of the legend of boxing, shared Jones’ image, with a caption reading, “The placement was everything. Congrats to the GOAT!!” Walsh is coming off his rematch victory over Sona Akale in June earlier this year, but his next visit to the ring remains a mystery.

In the meantime, Jones’ arch-rival has also shared his thoughts on the Miocic fight.

Daniel Cormier on Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic

Daniel Cormier and Jones have a rich past, but that didn’t seem to have affected Cormier’s take on Jones’s dominant victory over Miocic on Saturday night. Reflecting on the performance, ‘DC’ acknowledged his immense skills while setting aside their differences. “This dude [Jon Jones] prove time and time again, man, how good he is…,” he said on his YouTube channel.

“I do respect him tremendously, immensely as a fighter.” The 45-year-old highlighted Jones’ exceptional fight IQ, durability, and ability to adapt inside the octagon. “This guy has defended titles… over three generations of fighters,” ‘DC’ added praising Jones’ longevity. He noted that Miocic represented the final challenger from a past era, solidifying Jones’ status as a once-in-a-generation athlete.
