During the late 80s, boxing legend Mike Tyson was on a tear through the heavyweight division. By this time, he had already become champion and cemented himself as one of the best KO artists ever. This made ‘Iron’ Mike a polarizing figure on TV at the time, with millions tuning in to watch his fights.

This made audiences a little upset at Tyson who always finished the fight in a matter of minutes. In a recent episode of Hotboxin’, Usman shed light on the unintended consequences that arose when his family gathered to witness Tyson’s bouts. Growing up, Usman’s father, like countless others around the world, was a fan of combat sports. Naturally, he would gather the whole house along with his friends to watch Tyson fight. However, there was one instance when his father went to get beer to watch Tyson fight only to see that the fight was over by the time he returned with the beverage. This led to an evening that should have been filled with exhilaration now filled with frustration.

Mike you caused almost caused a couple of fights in my house growing up, uh, my dad would get the pay-per-views. I distinctly remember there was one we were just talking about. Back there in the Green Room, my dad said the fight was about to start. He went to get a beer in the garage. He had his friends in the living room. My dad went into the garage and when he came back, the fight was over. the fight was over,” said Usman.

Reflecting on these instances, Usman recognized the profound impact Tyson’s fights had on his family and their guests. Despite the unintended tensions that arose, it was a testament to the magnetic pull of fighters like ‘Iron’ Mike.
