Everyone’s aware of the bad blood between Canelo Alvarez and his former promoter, Oscar De La Hoya. Now, with his fight against Canelo fast approaching, Edgar Berlanga has also sparked a feud with the former world champion. While their back and forth on social media started a few days ago, it has boiled over into a full-blown exposé.
Berlanga is gearing up to face off against Canelo Alvarez on September 14th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, for the biggest fight of his career. Meanwhile, with a mere two days left in the bout, Oscar turned to X, claiming no one would buy pay-per-view for the fight and the sales wouldn’t even cross 100K buys. And yeah, get this—while doing so, he named himself the PPV King.
He wrote, “I’m the PPV king and @Canelo vs @EdgarBerlangaJr fight will not exceed 100k homes. Nobody is paying $90 for this snooze fest. Just speaking the facts as always.” Now, it’s worth mentioning that the Canelo vs. Berlanga fight is in tight competition with the Noche UFC event (UFC 306), which is right across the Las Vegas strip at the Sphere.

It will headline the bantamweight title fight between champion Sean O’Malley and Merab Dvalishvili. Interestingly, the UFC was initially confident about coming out the victor against the Canelo vs. Berlanga event, with their ticket prices costing an eye-watering $3,000 for nosebleed spots and premium tickets as high as $12,000.

However, with days left in the event, several seats remain unsold, and those prices dove below $750, according to Ticket Master at the time of writing. Meanwhile, the Canelo vs. Berlanga fight tickets cost substantially less with the cheapest option being $300. And reports have already emerged that the Canelo event at the T-Mobile Arena is already sold out. However, the UFC 306 pay-per-view on ESPN+ costs $10 less than Canelo-Berlanga at $89.99. So in terms of PPV sales, the UFC event may have a leg up.
Regardless, Berlanga wasted no time responding to Oscar De La Hoya’s criticism, offering a sharp reality check. He fired back, noting, “You are NOT the PPV king. @FloydMayweather is your daddy.” But Berlanga didn’t stop there. In a follow-up interview, he continued to criticize De La Hoya, further intensifying their feud.

Besides his claims about Canelo vs. Berlanga doing bad numbers on Mexican Independence Day, Oscar De La Hoya even claimed he would attend the UFC 306 event, rather than Canelo’s event despite his bad blood with UFC president Dana White. This mixed with his comments about the Canelo vs. Berlanga fight seems to have put ‘The Chosen One’ in a very bad mood.

While appearing in an interview for Matchroom Boxing yesterday, Berlanga said, “Guys like @OscarDeLaHoya that’s out there trying to destroy my reputation, destroy Canelo’s reputation.” Highlighting Oscar’s comments about their fight not selling well, Berlanga exposed Oscar, adding, “He flew from Vegas trying to come out from LA, trying to come down to sign me and we signed with one of the best – Eddie Hearn. So Oscar, F**k you.”
Despite Oscar De La Hoya’s apparent efforts to undermine the Canelo Alvarez vs. Edgar Berlanga fight, the event seems to be doing well. It remains to be seen if it will outdo its UFC rival in PPV sales or if De La Hoya’s prediction will ring true. What do you think?
