Canelo Alvarez has just completed the trilogy with Gennady Golovkin and currently is in the negotiation stage for his next fight. Alvarez was successful in defending four middleweight titles against ‘GGG’. Also, this fight was his comeback to the middleweight division, after an unsuccessful attempt to fight in the light heavyweight division against Dmitry Bivol. And now he’s planning a homecoming match in Mexico, against John Ryder. This paved a way for UFC supremo Dana White to swoop in, as he’s also planning to organize a Cinco de Mayo fight in Las Vegas, USA which may have overlapped with Saul Alvarez’s card.
Alvarez vs Ryder is scheduled to take place on May 6th. At first, everyone believed this fight to take place in Las Vegas, especially due to the upcoming Cinco de Mayo. But Canelo wants his next fight to take place in his homeland where he’s never fought in the last 12 years. And this decision of Canelo Alvarez was recently criticized by the father of David Benavidez.

Recently in the post-fight conference of UFC 285: Jones vs Gane, Dana White opened up about him hijacking Canelo’s spot on the auspicious day of Cinco de Mayo. As the reporter asked him about his previous interview where he stated that Vegas may want to see a Cinco de Mayo UFC card. Since Canelo Alvarez was in town at that time, the reporter asked whether that statement was an attempt to tease Canelo.
Dana White instantly denied that imputation. He said, “No, so what happened with that was uh I was telling my team, I think we should do a Cinco de Mayo fight, now we have three Mexican-born champions.”
White further said, “We were trying to figure it out, Canelo had the date, and not that I wouldn’t go, it’s an Eddie Hearn fight.” He then threw some light on his relationship with Eddie Hearn. He said, “I like Eddie Hearn, not gonna try to do that. But uhm, we don’t know yet, we’re still talking about it, working on it.”
Reportedly, even Hearn wants the fight to take place in Mexico and wants Canelo to have the best experience in his fight against John Ryder. So, this is a green flag to the UFC Cinco de Mayo card.
Eddie Hearn stated that the fight with John Ryder is still in the works of finalization
Now in Hearn’s recent conversation with Metro Sport, it’s clear that he understands how historic it will be for Canelo Alvarez’s homecoming in Mexico. It’s an important fight for Canelo and his promoter is trying to give him the best experience.

He said, “We are still trying to finalize the contracts for that fight and hopefully you will get an announcement next week. Now we are just working on getting everything over the line.”
