Who would win in a locked room: Canelo Alvarez or Conor McGregor? Let's hear your thoughts!

There’s a storm brewing between Canelo Alvarez and Conor McGregor, which fans feel should culminate in a bout. The unified super middleweight champion is about to get in the ring opposite Edgar Berlanga at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on September 14. This happens to be on the same night and same city, where the UFC 306 will take place. So of course, the UFC superstar, Conor McGregor, took an issue with the overlap.

Bringing his criticism of Canelo to social media, ‘The Notorious’ branded the Mexican superstar as a “cornflake” while suggesting Canelo could generate 300,000 pay-per-view buys at best. The former UFC dual champion even downplayed Canelo’s demand for $200 million to fight David Benavidez, adding that Riyadh Season Noche UFC, which is supposed to happen in the Vegas Sphere, “is going to run them from the strip”. He finished by claiming His Excellency Turki Alalshikh made the right decision to move on from the potential Canelo vs. Terence Crawford fight because in his words: “CANELO DOESN’T SELL”. So when Canelo heard about this, the champ had a few words of his own.

After McGregor’s post started making headlines, a reporter caught up with ‘Cinnamon’ during his recent press event in Los Angeles, where Canelo and Berlanga faced off for the second time. He probed Canelo about McGregor’s post regarding him and the fight being held in the same city across the street from the UFC event.

Canelo responded, stating, “What’s happening is that he’s helping Dana White to sell for the UFC. That’s why he is saying that. But he knows he is my son”, as per translations provided by the MMA page Championship Rounds. Meanwhile, Dana White blamed MGM for this overlap, stating, “The guys at MGM have done nothing but f**king disrespect me and the UFC for 20 years. It is what it is. Here we go”.

Regardless, this feud triggered the fans to call for a fight between McGregor and Canelo Alvarez in the comments section of the post.

Floyd Mayweather roped in

The one thing that is common between Canelo and McGregor is that both fighters lost to five-division champion Floyd Mayweather. Something this fan was quick to mention while asking for a fight. “Idk they both lost to Floyd. It might be a good fight to see,” the user wrote. Canelo lost to Floyd all the way back in 2013, and McGregor fell when he fought Mayweather at the end of the latter’s career in 2017.

Another user shared their prediction for the fight, writing, “Canelo would take his head off.” Notably, most mixed martial artists who transition to boxing have suffered a similar fate. Be it McGregor, or Tyron Woodley and Nate Diaz, who were defeated by Jake Paul, UFC champs don’t do well in boxing.

Someone else suggested McGregor has been desperate for a fight against Canelo for a long time. The user remarked, “Connor has been begging for a Canelo fight for years after his plan to get a manny fight fell apart after he lost to Dustin twice.” Interestingly, the duo was supposed to square off in 2021, but Manny Pacquiao backed out of the fight, which even led to a lawsuit. McGregor’s management company, Paradigm Sports, won a $5.1 million lawsuit against Pacquiao for breach of contract.

The next user came up with an interesting idea for pitting the duo against each other. “Lets lock them in a room and see who comes out,” wrote the user. Since it will be a room and not the boxing ring, it’s safe to assume McGregor will throw more than just punches, meaning, he has more chances of winning.

Meanwhile, this user revealed what would happen if their hypothetical fight was not in the boxing ring. “In a actual fight not boxing canelo wouldn’t survive longer than a minute 🤷🏽,” the user wrote. However, it’s unlikely that Canelo, who wouldn’t budge from his $200 million demand for a David Benavidez fight, would agree to fight inside the octagon.

While Canelo Alvarez is busy with his Edgar Berlanga fight, a lucrative offer seems to have presented itself to the Mexican boxing star. Will he take this opportunity to make some millions, or is all this just talk from both sides to hype their respective interests? Let us know in the comments below.
