Claressa Shields' true amateur record—Is she the greatest female boxer of all time?

If two-time Olympic gold medalist Claressa Shields succeeds in defeating Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse in her Heavyweight debut, ‘T-Rex’ would become a four-division world champion in the sport! However, although Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse is not as popular as Shields, there is no reason for the Canadian boxer to give in to Claressa considering the obstacles Vanessa overcame to win the WBC title. At this, while fans remained excited about Shields vs. Vanessa, ‘T-Rex’ revealed her true amateur record.

After winning possession of Vanessa’s WBC Heavyweight title, Claressa Shields would like to send the Canadian boxer back to her country empty-handed. “When I take her belt from her, she’s going back to Canada with nothing,” said Shields.

Confident that Vanessa’s size would not prohibit ‘T-Rex’ from shining at the Little Caesars Arena, Detroit, Shields declared, “I will be [the] Heavyweight champion on Saturday, and nobody will stand in my way.” In this connection, ahead of the match, as Boxing Kingdom celebrated Shields’ boxing journey, the boxer from Flint, Michigan objected to her amateur record known to the public till now.

However, as soon as Claressa Shields noticed the post, she replied, “77-1 in the amateurs.

So, it means we have lost the record of 14 fights Claressa Shields had as an amateur in the sport since her debut in 2010. Meanwhile, while Shields corrects the world about her amateur record, her opponent Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse is confident of retaining her hard-earned title.

After only three professional fights, Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse had the chance to become the WBC Heavyweight champion in her division. However, Alejandra Jimenez upset then-heavy-footed Vanessa with a TKO in the fourth round. Over the years, learning from her mistakes, a student of the game, Vanessa Lepage-Joanisse has improved significantly. In her last fight against Abril Argentina Vidal for the Heavyweight title, Vanessa exhibited speed, footwork, stamina and a fast jab. So, it would not be a cakewalk for Claressa Shields.

I’m not a trash talker. I respect Claressa Shields, and I know what she’s accomplished, but a fight is a fight,” said the 29-year-old Canadian boxer.  “I’ll be ready Saturday night, and I’m coming home with the belt in my suitcase. It’s going to be a fight, but I’m going to win it,” she added, priding herself on her individual achievements.
